Systems Administrator Specialist
Position Summary: Support the day-to-day operations of all servers and other production services within the college. Perform software patching and keep all systems in compliance with all applicable security standards. Identify trends and source of problem(s), and recommend/initiate/perform corrective action. Work with hardware and software vendors to diagnose and correct problems. Perform long-range and capacity planning studies to determine the type of resources needed to support expected volume, application systems and operating assurance. Performing emergency troubleshooting and issue resolution. Develop standards and recommendations for critical functions and services, such as system configuration and backup & recovery Develop and maintain written documentation to support the setup and maintenance of high profile services. Engage in continual process and service improvement cycles with colleagues, clients, and leadership to ensure high quality service delivery. Monitor systems backup procedures and execute recovery operations when necessary. Provide excellent customer service to all clients, as well as communicate, and interact professionally and courteously with all members of the IT staff.
Responsibilities: Perform initial setup, software installation, testing, and security hardening of Windows and Linux computer server systems. Maintain software, including testing, evaluation and installation of new versions or authorized modifications to custom and vendor-supplied operating systems and related software. Perform software patching and keep all server systems in compliance with all applicable standards. Troubleshoot hardware/software problems and system failures. Determines and initiates appropriate and immediate actions needed to restore normal services with minimal down time. Investigate recurring and related operating system failures/inefficiencies by reviewing system logs, dumps and other information from clients or technical personnel. Proactively identify trends or potential problems, and recommend/initiate/perform corrective action. Work with hardware and software vendors to diagnose and correct problems. Monitor and evaluate operating efficiency, analyze hardware/software performance and tuning. Design, code, and install modifications to tuning parameters to optimize systems or software. Provide data for long-range and capacity planning studies to determine the type of resources needed to support expected volume, application systems and operating assurance. Make recommendations based upon this data. Perform, monitor, verify, and maintain system backups and execute recovery operations when necessary. Create, document, and follow backup and recovery procedures. Prepare documentation of systems and software for permanent records. Advise and train clients regarding access and utilization of server systems.
