Job Description:

Assists in the development and implementation of the educational and the athletic components of the NCAA Division I volleyball program. Assists in creating and implementing the general business operations of the program. Responsible for team travel, video editing, newsletters, and summer camps.

This position receives general supervision from Head Coach, and exercises close supervision of the student athlete team, interns, work study students, volunteers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Assist Head Coach with Teaching and Coaching
• Involvement with all administrative and organizational aspects of NCAA Division I program under the supervision of the head coach.
• Supervision of players in a coordinated and planned program of practices and competition, with a concern for the players' health and welfare, physical and psychological preparation.
• Assist with the organization, planning and implementation of daily practices.
• Direct on-court coaching responsibilities (as assigned by the head coach).
• Assist with the development and improvement of player skills. Work with individual players before and after practice, when requested.
• Teach out-of-season, individual skill sessions, staying within the NCAA regulations for individual player workouts.
• Evaluate game tapes and provide information to head coach.

2. Recruiting
• Assist in the identification and recruiting of academically and athletically qualified student-athletes for admission to the University with adherence to admissions and athletic department policies and procedures.
• Pass the NCAA Coaches' recruiting test annually.
• Identify and evaluate high school and talent through evaluation at games, tournaments, and video.
• Weekly phone conversations with prospects.
• Junior recruiting—Identify prospects and follow-up as requested by the head coach.
• Request transcripts from recruits and follow up with appropriate calls to registrar and high school counselors.
• Unofficial visits - Coordinate unofficial visits in keeping with appropriate NCAA regulations.
• Official visits – Coordinate official visits, including travel, the involvement of current players, arrangements for meals and entertainment. Arrange for academic meetings with faculty members and for an academic class with one of the players. Provide tours of campus.
• Respond to leads and inquiries in a timely fashion.

3. Team Travel Coordination
• Coordinate air and ground transportation with authorized travel agency.
• Secure practice times and facilities on the road.
• Secure bus use with transportation coordinator.
• Make restaurant reservations.
• Request and distribute cash advances to players and coaches, and secure appropriate documentation/signatures.
• Coordinate all video equipment.
• Create and distribute detailed travel itineraries.
• File expense report for team in a timely manner upon return from each away trip.

4. General Assignments
• Knowledge of and adherence to all University, NCAA, and conference rules and regulations, policies and procedures, with special attentions to recruiting, eligibility, admissions, and financial aid.
• Enforce University and athletic department policies and regulations with regard to use/abuse of alcohol and drugs by team members.
• Maintain professional growth by attendance at appropriate meetings, clinics, workshops, etc.
• Assist in conference, regional and national events hosted by the University when requested.
• Assist in the organization of team and department awards presentations for student-athletes.
• Prepare for end-of-season team banquet, including the creation of an end-of-season video.
• Create and submit post-season all-American videos for appropriate candidates.
• Maintain statistical records in cooperation with the media relations office.
• Work with the head coach and equipment manager on all uniform and equipment orders.
• Create detailed team binder at the beginning of the academic year for each student-athlete to include schedules, monthly calendars, travel information, blank scouting sheets, team, training room, and travel rules, and fundraising information.
• Support program fundraising efforts through monthly newsletters, weekly emails, frequent social networking updates, and gift acknowledgment.

5. Scouting
• Assist head coach with the scouting of opponents.
• Provide detailed, written reports, and include information on offenses, defenses and individual tendencies, and any other information requested by the head coach.
• Establish a video exchange program with non-conference schools, and determine format (online, skype, or DVD).
• Video record all home and away matches, create DVDs, and upload home conference matches.

6. Camp Coordination
• Set dates with assistant director for sports camps.
• Participate in all camp meetings.
• Send brochures to recruits.
• Monitor enrollment.
• Create rooming lists and camp groups.
• Order balls and t-shirts.
• Provide overnight supervision of campers in residence halls.


• Bachelor's degree required.
• At least one year of related volleyball experience.
• Understanding of NCAA rules and regulations strongly preferred.

• Ability to communicate effectively with athletes, members of the University community, San Diego community, and all media.
• Possess good management skills.
• Ability to understand the goals and responsibilities of running a successful athletic program at the NCAA Division I level.
• Ability and desire to represent the University in a professional and responsible manner; excellent interpersonal skills.
• Adherence to and appreciation for NCAA/conference/league regulations and ability to instill those values in subordinates and students.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Scoutware, DataVolley, video recording and editing software and equipment, and general office equipment.

• Heartsaver CPR /AED certification required. Must have this certificate within 6 weeks of employment.
• Must pass NCAA Division I Coaches Recruiting Test, (yearly). Must complete this within 6 weeks of employment.
• California driver's license required within 6 weeks of employment.

• Must be able to travel for extended periods of time for athletic and recruiting events.
• Successful completion of required background checks.

Degree Verification Requirement: Persons offered employment in this position will be required to provide official education transcripts for degree verification purposes.
