Western Kentucky University announces a search for an accomplished, dynamic, and visionary academic leader for the position of Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. WKU seeks an individual who is strongly committed to advancing the academic mission of a student-centered applied-research institution and fostering the scholarship, teaching, and professional development of the faculty.
Founded in 1906, WKU is located in Bowling Green, Kentucky, an ethnically and racially diverse city of 61,500 people, about 110 miles south of Louisville and 65 miles north of Nashville. More than 50 different languages are spoken in and around Bowling Green and people of more than 30 nationalities call the area home. We seek to attract research- and teaching-active, culturally and academically diverse faculty members. The university’s population of approximately 20,000 students includes 35% first generation university/college, 15% underrepresented minority, and 6% international students. A comprehensive university, WKU is student-centered and focuses on applied research that expands knowledge; improves learning; and serves the region, state, and nation.
WKU academic programs are offered through six academic colleges: Education and Behavioral Sciences, Health and Human Services, Business, Science and Engineering, Arts and Letters, and the University College as well as special university units such as the Mahurin Honors College, the Gatton Academy for Math and Science in Kentucky, the Chinese Flagship, the Confucius Institute, the Suzanne Vitale Clinical Education Complex, and the Center for Gifted Studies. In addition, WKU serves the communities of Elizabethtown/Fort Knox, Glasgow and Owensboro through its regional campuses. WKU also has a robust online enrollment and provides nationally-ranked online degree and certificate programs.
The Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs reports directly to the President and serves as the chief academic officer of the University. The Provost oversees the creation, implementation, and advancement of the University’s academic mission and is responsible for the academic integrity of the University and for fostering a challenging and stimulating intellectual environment. The Provost will lead the implementation of the University’s new strategic plan and budget model; lead the qualitative enhancement of graduate and professional programs; identify and pursue new extramural funding opportunities; engage in short and long-term planning; and support the continuing refinement and expansion of infrastructure.
The successful candidate will be a proven academic leader with a distinguished record of teaching, research, and service. An earned doctorate or appropriate terminal degree in an academic discipline offered by the University with qualifications meriting appointment at the rank of full professor with tenure is required. The successful candidate will have significant academic leadership experience at the level of academic dean or higher in addition to experience in planning and administration of human, fiscal, and facility resources; aspire to a high degree of personal and professional integrity; have a commitment to fairness, human rights, and social responsibility; and possess a leadership style that is inclusive and collegial toward the entire campus community.
