Ross University School of Medicine invites applications for a temporary position as an Anatomy Lab Technician for the Spring 2018 semester (16 weeks) in Knoxville, TN. We will consider candidates for full-time or part-time employment based upon availability and experience.

Our mission is to prepare highly dedicated students to become effective, successful physicians in the United States. Basic science coursework is taught in Dominica and students then complete their clinical studies in the United States. After passing all prerequisite examinations, Ross graduates are licensed to practice medicine in all 50 states of the U.S.

Cadaver Off-loading:

  • Clean and disinfect the holding room prior to the arrival of new cadavers.
  • Handle new cadavers as they get offloaded. Duties include unwrapping and inspecting cadavers for defects, obesity and evidence of decomposition.
  • Clean and relocate the cadavers into the storage facility During this procedure, the bodies are shaved, washed and disinfected. They are fitted with a medallion (RUSM identification tag). The bodies are then put in airtight cadaver bags and placed on racks.

Daily oversight of the Anatomy Facility:

  • Maintain the lab in optimal condition.
  • Ensure working stations are always tidy. This is achieved by routinely cleaning and wiping dip tanks and trays.
  • Replenish disposables such as paper towels, soap and first aid kits.
  • Inspect and maintain lab equipment and gadgets (i.e., immersion tanks, sinks, floors, ceiling, cold room and other teaching aids).
  • Move cadavers in the lab as needed.
  • Document lab activities by maintaining daily logs.
  • Prepare reagents and preservation solutions.
  • Receive and unpack all incoming supplies and equipment purchases.
  • Inventory and organize equipment and supplies in the storage room.

Care of Cadavers in the Gross Anatomy Laboratory:

  • Prepare preservative solutions.
  • Maintain mold-free cadavers by performing daily inspection on the cadavers.
  • Ensure the cadavers are always covered and soaked in preservative solution.
  • Ensure there is no switching of body parts from different cadavers. Body parts that are dissected and separated from the bodies are immediately tagged.
  • Participation in Gross Anatomy Laboratory Sessions:
  • Assist the students and faculty during dissection.
  • Assist the students to move and lift cadavers.
  • Section cadavers as needed for studies and dissection.
  • Provide the faculty and students with dissection tools.
  • Distribute teaching specimens and anatomical models to students and faculty.
  • Interact and assist the chair, section leads and faculty in running the lab.

Post-Lab Maintenance Procedures:

  • Inspect the lab after each dissection.
  • Inspect the immersion tanks to ensure that all the cadavers are covered and the trays are rolled to the bottom.
  • Gather all cadaveric waste tissues and place them in the appropriate receptacles fro disposal
  • Dispose cadaveric waste materials.


  • Prepare cadavers for transport for cremation.

Practical Exams:

  • Assist in setting up practical examinations.
  • Work closely with the section lead and other faculty in preparing the lab and cadavers for tagging.
  • Clean and reorganize the lab after practical examinations.

General maintenance of the facility:

  • Maintain the anatomy facility,
  • Assist the Lab Manager in resolving problems with ventilation, air-condition, electrical, plumbing, computers, TV screens or other resources.
  • Inspect the facility to ensure there no damages or leaks.
  • Inspect lab electronics, computers and associated gadgets to ensure they are in good working condition.
  • Ensure all rooms are tidy at all times.
  • Perform basic services on cadaver
  • Contact the maintenance department or the appropriate personnel if there is a problem in the Anatomy Facility.

Other duties, activities:

  • Prepare the facility for visitors.
  • Support both students and faculty researchers from other departments.
  • Participate in inventory of cadavers and supplies.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Technical skills in handling laboratory equipment (e.g. scalpels, scissors, saws, chisels)
