Vivian and Hymie Sosland Endowed Chair in Urban Teacher Education / Associate/Full Professor
The School of Education at the University of Missouri – Kansas City (UMKC) announces its search for the Vivian and Hymie Sosland Endowed Chair in Urban Teacher Education, beginning in Fall 2018. The successful candidate will have the credentials required to hold a faculty appointment at the rank of associate or full professor in the Division of Teacher Education & Curriculum Studies (TE&CS). The individual selected for the position will join a dedicated and collaborative group of faculty and staff and provide administrative leadership in TE&CS.
The Sosland Endowed Chair will be an outstanding scholar in teacher education, with a focus on urban education. The successful candidate will have an established record of external research funding (area of expertise is open) and will conduct an active program of funded research that can create synergies with P-12 schools and other partners in the educational community. The Sosland Endowed Chair will also lead the implementation of a quality assurance and improvement plan within the teacher preparation program that utilizes data in a systematic, continuous, and innovative manner. This position will play a major role in helping the School of Education meet national teacher preparation provider accreditation standards.
Now is an exciting time to join the School of Education at UMKC as it implements a new state-approved teacher professional program in Fall 17, while revitalizing the Urban Education Research Center (UERC) and the Institute for Urban Education (IUE). The School has been NCATE-accredited since 1961 and serves as Kansas City’s research school of education and partner to the metropolitan area’s school districts. The School is scheduled to have its CAEP accreditation on-site visit in Spring 2018.

• Doctoral degree in teacher education or related field that meets academic credentials for the position
• Record of external research funding
• Experience teaching in a college/university setting
• Experience serving on dissertations
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with others
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to social justice and urban issues
• Experience teaching or providing professional services in diverse urban communities and schools
• Experience with accreditation efforts in teacher preparation programs
• Previous leadership experience in higher education
• Background in quantitative research and advanced statistical methods
