Job description

Duties: Reporting to the Director of Wharton Media Relations, the Associate Director is responsible for daily media relations activities of a high-volume department that supports campuses in Philadelphia, San Francisco and Beijing. Develop media relations strategies for faculty, Sr. Administrators, and academic leaders. Work closely with top-tier media outlets, Wharton's 225+ world-renowned faculty, and Wharton/Penn staff. Identify, develop, write and pitch media stories in support of our strategic priorities, write and proofread press releases, articles, blogs, newsletters, email blasts. Serve as media advisor to faculty, academic leaders, and senior leadership. Prepare and guide faculty and administrators in advance of domestic and international print and broadcast interviews. Provide logistical, technical, and ABC guidance (acknowledge, bridge, communicate) in advance of the interview. Collaborate with internal and external constituents to develop/implement appropriate media relations and communications strategies for gaining the highest level of visibility across the media landscape. Manage and/or support daily crisis communication efforts; manage highly sensitive issues that affect the brand. Provide direction/support in planning and implementation of media relations/communications strategies/press releases for high visibility events, including graduation, Global Forums, Speaker Series, Authors at Wharton. Collaborate with external PR staff; staff graduation. Collaborate with internal and external constituents to create consistent communications strategies and messaging for projects, major gifts, and various VIP events that require high level media collaborations and strategy development for domestic and international activities.

Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in English, Journalism, Public Relations, or Communications with 3-5 years of professional experience in a high-volume media relations environment, or equivalent combination of education and experience. PR agency experience preferred.

Candidate must posses strong leadership skills, ability to take initiative, exercise good judgement, and make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment. Required to work independently, multi-task and manage multiple projects and situations simultaneously and with diplomacy.

Proficiency in social media management as related to media relations. Excellent verbal, written, listening, editing and presentation skills with ability top pitch stories to top-tier media journalists.

Occasional travel and evening/weekend hours required.
