Primary Function of Organization Unit: The NC State Veterinary Hospital (VH), established in 1983, is one of the highest rated veterinary academic medical centers in the country, serving communities throughout North Carolina as well as many other states. The hospital staffs over twenty clinical services with board certified specialists that are nationally and even internationally renowned, ensuring the VH is on the cutting edge of veterinary medicine. Patients benefit from the combined expertise of multiple specialists utilizing a team approach to patient health care. Each year, nearly 25,000 patients are treated in the VH. The VH provides compassionate care, state of the art specialty health care, expert clinical instruction for 4th-year veterinary students from College of Veterinary Medicine, and ongoing investigation of innovative techniques and procedures to further advance the field of veterinary medicine. The Clinical Pathology Laboratory (CPL) is a completely computerized laboratory operating 24 hours/day, 365 days per year and is comprised of 8 smaller laboratory entities: Special Chemistry, Coagulation, Immunohematology, Hematology, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Immunology/Flow Cytometry and Cytology. The CPL has three major functions: it is primarily a teaching/service laboratory, aiding in the teaching of Clinical Pathology to veterinary students through providing laboratory results for the diagnosis and treatment of disease in patients admitted to the NC State Veterinary Hospital(VH). This laboratory also provides clinical laboratory testing for research cases in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) and functions as a service laboratory to CVM researchers. Additionally, it functions as a reference laboratory for selected tests sent in by referring veterinarians. Since the lab began in 1984, our services have expanded to include a large variety of tests with approximately 800 order able tests and 100 test profiles. The laboratory also serves as a central receiving area for non- infectious "send-out" tests. An average of 5,000 accessions/month are performed in this laboratory.
Essential Job Duties: The Medical Laboratory Supervisor oversees the day to day operations of the clinical pathology lab. This involves human resource supervision and management of at least 8 full-time and 8 part-time positions. In addition, this position is responsible for quality assurance measures that insure the accurate and timely completion of laboratory analysis for the NCSU CVM Veterinary Hospital as well as other entities.
Department Required Skills: Capable of functioning as a clinical laboratory technician ~ Understands laboratory equipment and processes ~ Competent in establishing SOPs compliant with both State and Federal regulatory agencies ~
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: BS degree in clinical laboratory science 5-7 years of laboratory technician experience 3-5 years in laboratory management 1-3 years in a supervisory role
Necessary Licenses and Certifications: ASCP certified
