Job description

Duties: The Middle East Center's (MEC) raises awareness about the history, politics, and cultures of the Middle East and North Africa through implementing K-14 educational outreach programming, special events and academic lectures relating to the region.

Working closely with the Center Director, the Associate Director administers various grants and fellowships (including but not limited to Title VI and FLAS), prepares reports and grant proposals, oversees the daily operations of the Middle East Center, supervises staff members, and monitors budgets to ensure timely payments, as necessary. The Associate director oversees and manages outreach activities, including but not limited to general programming, teacher training workshops, collaborating with other Penn centers, departments, and entities, and working with community partners and with counterparts at other universities, as appropriate.

The Associate Director also manages Center's performance measurement and evaluation plan; programmatic initiatives; and works with the affiliated faculty and partners on co-sponsored events, establishes internal and external linkages as required by federal grants, and assists the Director in the administration of the Modern Middle East Studies (MMES). Works with Center Director on new initiatives and long-range planning.

Qualifications: A Bachelor's degree and 2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience are required. A Master's degree, or higher, in addition to 3+ years of experience preferred. Strong interpersonal skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, supervisory experience, ability to work in a fast-paced environment, multitasking, and ability to catch up with moving deadlines and attention to details are required. Event planning experience, flexibility to work occasional weekends and evenings, ability to manage multiple projects, and strong Apple computer proficiency including: MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are required. Respect for confidentiality is essential. A Bachelor's (or higher) degree in area studies, experience in international education, previous experience in teacher training programs, work in a university setting, and proficiency in a modern Middle Eastern language is preferred.
