Primary Function of Organization Unit: The DDes is an advanced interdisciplinary distance-learning program in design whose first cohort of students will be admitted for Fall 2018. The program's purpose is to promote research in support of professional designers who are actively creating the artifacts, communications, environments, and organizing structures and systems of the future. It is open to established design practitioners who wish to develop high-level, transformative expertise in applied design. DDes students pursue original investigations to advance new knowledge specifically through design-based cases and methods. These investigations may be grounded in a single design field or, alternatively, may cross boundaries and translate principles from other relevant disciplines. Essential Job Duties: The new faculty member will support the curriculum and success of the DDes program as well as his or her home discipline (department). This position will collaborate with affiliated faculty in constructing and teaching new courses, advising on program policies, and participating in admissions procedures. Other duties may include assisting in program tasks such as event planning, representing and promoting the program at professional events, and/or data collection for long-range planning and evaluation.
Minimum Education/Experience: * PhD / Doctoral degree, terminal design degree or equivalent * Professional experience in a design office, agency, or related form of practice
Department Required Skills: * Effective teaching experience in a relevant design discipline * Experience with online course development or instructional design * Products of design research as disseminated through peer-reviewed venues (e.g. exhibition, competition, publication and/or equivalent) * A record of interdisciplinary collaborations (e.g. successfully executed events or projects) * Demonstrated ability to identify and pursue external funding sources for design-related work with a focus on cross-disciplinary collaboration
