Full-time, tenure track faculty position.

Starting Salary Range: $54,397 to $83,440 per year, salary placement determined by documented education and experience; maximum initial salary step placement on the faculty salary schedule is step 9.

Cabrillo College provides a doctoral stipend of $3,632 per year for eligible faculty.

Benefits: Cabrillo College currently provides a benefit stipend that employees apply towards benefit selections for medical, dental, life and long-term disability insurance.

Days Per Year: Faculty enjoy a 175-day work schedule.

Beginning Date: Position scheduled to begin on Monday, August 20, 2018, pending funding and Governing Board ratification. Assignments may include distance education courses, may be scheduled over summer and/or winter months, and may be scheduled at various campus locations days, evenings, and/or weekends.

About the College: Situated on Monterey Bay in the county of Santa Cruz, California, Cabrillo College is one of the most highly regarded community colleges in the state for its success in the area of transfer and career education, and currently serves approximately 12,000 students each semester. Cabrillo College transfers many of its students to three nearby universities - the University of California at Santa Cruz, San Jose State University in the heart of Silicon Valley, and California State University at Monterey Bay. Cabrillo's career education is closely connected to the nearby Silicon Valley business environment as well as that of the greater San Francisco Bay Area. Cabrillo focuses on student-centered learning and has a tradition of collegial governance.

About the Department: Cabrillo College's HAWK (Health, Athletics, Wellness, and Kinesiology) Division seeks a dynamic and innovative individual to join its staff as the Wellness Education Center (WEC) Director. The department philosophy encourages students to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve and maintain optimal health and well-being. Cabrillo College offers intercollegiate athletic programs that reflect the interests and abilities of the college's student body and local high schools. Student health and welfare, sound academic progress, and ethical conduct are the foundation of the Kinesiology and Athletic programs. The department has a vision of the WEC to be the premier fitness educational facility in the county. There are 4 contract instructors in Kinesiology, 3 who are intercollegiate coaches. Cabrillo College supports 15 athletic programs (seven men's and eight women's).

About the Position: The full-time faculty Wellness Education Center (WEC) Director performs under the direction of the Associate Dean of Athletics and Kinesiology. In compliance with established college policies and procedures, the faculty director, coordinates and participates in activities supporting program involvement in governance and develops recommendations regarding scheduling, staffing, instructional program planning, resource allocation, and facility use.

Examples of Duties

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

Staffing

  • Recommends full-time, adjunct, and support staff needs.
  • Assists in recruitment and selection of staff including coordinating search and selection activities for adjunct faculty.
  • Interviews and recommends the hiring of student workers; submits employment paperwork.
  • Organizes new employee orientations regarding program procedures, instructional issues, and safety training.
  • Works with faculty to:
  • Write job announcements and recommends search and selection committee compositions.
  • Provide for mentoring of new contract and adjunct faculty.
  • Support course consistency in accordance with the official course outline.
  • May identify the need to add or cancel classes of find substitutes to cover classes or appointments.Supervision and Evaluation
    • Participates in relevant faculty evaluations when mandated by external accreditation agencies.
    • Refers personnel matters to the appropriate administrator.
    • May assist and participate in evaluating the day-to-day activities of assigned staff and student workers.
    Budget
    • Coordinates, reviews, and recommends Wellness Education Center expenditures for program needs within established budget parameters and administrative procedures.
    • Submits Wellness Education Center budget modification/revision proposals with faculty as identified in instructional/student services planning processes.
    • May direct the operation of a District-sponsored program that generates income in support of the instructional program.
    Curriculum/Services
    • Recommends Wellness Education Center expansion and modification as identified in instructional/student services plans.
    • Leads faculty efforts in maintaining currency, quality, and effectiveness in program curriculum/services.
    • Assists faculty in developing and formatting curriculum proposals.
    • Coordinates and participates in community advisory committee or articulation officer/transfer committee and serves as liaison to program faculty.
    Scheduling
    • Prepares Wellness Education Center schedule recommendations within District guidelines and parameters.
    • Reviews and recommends corrections to the Wellness Education Center class schedule and catalog.
    • Recommends contract and adjunct faculty assignments according to established procedures and parameters.
    Instructional Planning
    • Serves as primary resource for staffing the Wellness Education Center during the instructional planning process.
    • Works with the Associate Dean and faculty in the development of the Wellness Education Center Instructional Plan.
    • Contributes to the writing of the instructional plan in accordance with CIP guidelines.
    • Coordinates and guides the operation of the Wellness Education Center in concert with the instructional plan.
    Accreditation, Certification and Professional Licensing
    • Coordinates accreditation compliance in accordance with board policy.
    • Monitors, ensures compliance, and advises regarding all required certifications and licenses.
    Facilities Operation, Purchasing and Maintenance
    • Directs the operation of the Wellness Education Center, in addition to serving as a classroom, provides services to students or community members.
    • Orders supplies specialized to the Wellness Education Center, and in the repair and maintenance of equipment.
    Student Recruitment, Advisement and Retention
    • Coordinates and assists with the recruitment, retention, prerequisite challenges, and tracking of students within the Wellness Education Center.
    • Performs program and career advising in conjunction with counseling services
    • Works with the marketing and communications department to coordinate Wellness Education Center activities regarding marketing and recruitment as outlined in the approved instructional plan.
    • Responds to students and the community regarding Wellness Education Center questions and concerns.
    Community Collaboration (Industry/Educational Institutions)
    • Coordinates Wellness Education Center faculty activities in university, high school, and community outreach and events as outlined in the approved instructional plan.
    • Works with the Associate Dean and Planning and Research Office in conducting industry surveys.
    • Works with the marketing and communications department to coordinate press. releases, advertisements, and other public information promoting Wellness Education Center programs and events.


    Minimum Qualifications

    Required Education from a U.S. Department of Education recognized accredited organization and licensure qualifications:

    • Master's degree in kinesiology, physical education, exercise science, education with an emphasis in physical education, kinesiology, physiology of exercise or adaptive physical education OR
    • Bachelor's degree in kinesiology, physical education, exercise science, education with an emphasis in physical education, kinesiology, physiology of exercise or adaptive physical education AND Master's degree in any life science, dance, physiology, health education, recreation administration or physical therapy OR
    • The equivalent OR
    • A lifetime California Community College Instructor credential in Health and Physical Care Services and Related Technologies.
    Required Discipline Specific Requirement:
    • Two (2) years of Kinesiology and/or Athletics experience in higher education, which includes fitness curriculum planning, resource allocation, and budget administration.
    Equivalency

Additionally, candidates must provide documentation, as part of this application process, sufficient to convince the committee that the candidate possesses the equivalent of these minimum qualifications, including the depth and breadth of discipline knowledge plus general education.

    *NOTE: Graduate students currently working on a Master's degree are encouraged to apply, with the understanding that:
    • The graduate student MUST complete the Supplemental Application for Equivalency Determination form AND
    • The degree must be completed and confirmed by July 1, 2018
    Required Professional Expertise:
    • Currency and depth of knowledge in kinesiology education
    • Knowledge of and commitment to teaching strategies and practices that enhance student success at community colleges, including effective use of technology
    • Effective oral and written communication skills
    • Demonstrated ability to teach the courses or perform the duties effectively as described above
    • Demonstrated ability to communicate well with students of diverse academic, ethnic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds; gender identities, sexual orientations; and students with disabilities
    • Development and review of curriculum as well as including assessments of learning.
    • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with others
    Desired Qualifications/Performance Expectations:
    • Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, Certified Personal Training Certificate through reputable association and/or other fitness experience at the high school level, college level, or in the community
    • CPR First Aid Certification
    • Doctorate degree in kinesiology from an accredited college or university
    • Knowledge of and commitment to the community college philosophy
    • Demonstrated ability to serve in the assigned discipline and perform the other duties effectively as described
    • Experience with innovative teaching methods, including the instructional use of computers
    • Successful online teaching experience
    • Ability to:
      • Communicate well with students of diverse academic, ethnic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds, including students with disabilities
      • Work effectively and collaboratively with others
      • Provide effective direction of an assigned program and/or facility
      • Develop and manage a program or facility budget
      • Train, schedule, supervise, and participate in the evaluation of classified employees and student workers
      • Work effectively under deadlines and multiple demands
      • Understand, interpret and apply pertinent laws, rules and regulations
      • Assume position of leadership in the program, division, and on college committees, including teamwork
