The Department of Ceramics in the Division of Fine Arts, Rhode Island School of Design seeks applications for a full-time faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor to commence fall 2018.

Rhode Island School of Design recognizes diversity and inclusivity as fundamental to its learning community and integral to an art and design education. We welcome candidates whose experience in teaching, scholarship, professional practice, or service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to excellence.

The mission of RISD's renowned Ceramics program is to instruct students in the concept, method and practice of ceramic art and design, to facilitate progressive creative exploration in the field, and through open, critical process, support the growth of personal expression and artistic identity in the medium. The curriculum stresses the importance of concepts, materials and processes from ancient to contemporary times. The extraordinary equipment and facilities encompass a variety of old and new technologies.

Close connections to the professional world are maintained through internships, seminars, speakers and interactions with visiting artists and critics. Collaborative projects with artists and faculty from other RISD departments bring vibrancy to RISD's small but vital ceramics community.

The department is seeking an artist with an MFA (bachelor's degree required), or relevant advanced degree or the professional equivalent, and at least five years full-time teaching experience at the college level, or equivalent in industry or professional experience, whose personal work shows a high level of proficiency and commitment to the ongoing development of the ceramic arts. The candidate should have a personal, professional focus in applied ceramics and/or production work with a commitment to material experimentation and research while having depth of knowledge and skill in a broad range of concept and craft.

We are seeking candidates who demonstrate the leadership skills to serve as Department Head of Ceramics and/or Graduate Program Director, positions appointed by the Provost on a cyclical basis. The candidate should have the capability to develop curriculum that helps to both steward and advance the department and the field, as well as the ability to oversee the department curriculum, facilities, and staff, and lead continuous faculty development.

The full-time faculty teaching load is the equivalent of six three-credit courses, comprised of a combination of sophomore through graduate-level courses. Department Heads are released from teaching two teaching units, or course equivalents, per year. In addition to teaching, full-time faculty are expected to maintain a professional practice, serve on college committees, advise students, participate in curriculum development and other departmental activities and projects, and contribute to the vibrancy of the intellectual life of the college.
