ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR FOR WRITING IN THE SCIENCES AND ENGINEERING

New York University’s Expository Writing Program (EWP) invites applications for the position of Associate Director for Writing in the Sciences and Engineering to start September 1, 2018, pending budgetary and administrative approval. This is a Continuing Contract Faculty position at the rank of clinical associate professor. Initial appointment will be for a three-year term with the possibility of renewal for subsequent multi-year terms, as well as promotion in rank.
Reporting to the Director of the Expository Writing Program, the Associate Director will provide leadership for and oversight of EWP’s offerings and curriculum at the Tandon School of Engineering, including: first-year writing courses; support for student writers, including the Writing Center; and placement. In collaboration with appropriate departments and programs at Tandon, as well as with the Director of Writing in the Disciplines, the Associate Director will be charged with strategic planning for new writing initiatives in the School of Engineering. Teaching load is one course per semester, with the expectation of administrative work over the summer.
The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated record of leadership in writing instruction for engineering, science and technology students, as well as substantial administrative and teaching experience. We are especially interested in candidates with experience working with diverse student populations, in particular those for whom English is not a home language. Active involvement in the fields of scientific and technical communication, science and technology studies, or related fields, as well as writing across the curriculum/writing across the disciplines, and communication across the curriculum, is desired. A PhD is preferred, although candidates with an EdD, MFA, or other appropriate terminal degree are encouraged to apply.
