California State University Channel Islands is the newest campus of the California State University, the largest system of public higher education in the United States. The institution is innovative, student centered, and committed to graduating students with its Four Pillars: a) international and b) multicultural perspectives; c) integrative approaches; and d) community engagement. The campus currently serves 6,600 students, and at its full capacity the campus will serve 15,000 students (www.csuci.edu).
Founded in 2002 and located midway between Santa Barbara and Los Angeles and 10 minutes from the Pacific Ocean, CSUCI offers 25 undergraduate majors, ten graduate degrees, a joint doctorate in educational leadership, and a variety of certificate and teaching credential programs. CSUCI is a Hispanic-Serving Institution that values the diversity of its students and community and the collegial faculty-staff-student interactions which have characterized the institution to date. The current student body is 50% Hispanic, 49% Pell Recipient, and 59% first-generation college students. Over half of CSUCI’s undergraduates are transfers from community colleges. CSUCI is deeply committed to serving and developing all of its students.
The Dean of Arts and Sciences is the chief academic, fiscal, and administrative officer of Arts and Sciences and reports to the Provost. The Dean provides leadership for the faculty in the Arts and Sciences in support of excellence in teaching, research, creative activities, and service; oversees the development of new academic programs, curricula, program reviews, and assessment of learning outcomes; makes faculty appointments, retention, tenure and promotion recommendations to the Provost; oversees student academic progress; promotes and facilitates the development of interdisciplinary programs; oversees the budgets of the program areas; fosters professional development for the faculty and the staff; recommends the appointment of chairs to the Provost; supervises the employment and retention of temporary faculty and support staff; represents the faculty and the University to the community at large, and involves the greater community in advisory capacities; oversees teaching assignments and implements workload policies; fosters open and effective communication among the faculty, staff, and students; meets regularly with program chairs and convenes faculty meetings as necessary; and collaborates with student service departments to ensure student support programming/initiatives and administrative processes are in line with the University’s mission.
The successful candidate will have the necessary experiences, skills, competencies, and dispositions to provide academic leadership and guidance to Arts and Sciences, including: a terminal degree in a field represented in Arts and Sciences; eligibility for appointment at the rank of full professor; an excellent record of teaching, scholarship, and service; and significant experience in academic leadership that demonstrates an appreciation for the increasing diversity of faculty, staff, and students; an unwavering commitment to inclusion and student success; an openness to new, creative, and innovative curricula, degrees, interdisciplinary and international opportunities, and modalities of instruction; demonstrated success in building a collaborative and transparent leadership model; and a record of making informed, impartial, and tough decisions to advance Arts and Sciences and the University.
