The Department of Physics and Astronomy in the College of College of Science and Mathematics invites applications and nominations for the position of non-tenure-track Lecturer on the Statesboro campus.
In January 2017, the University System of Georgia Board of Regents voted to consolidate Armstrong State University and Georgia Southern University. The new, 27,000-student university will be named Georgia Southern University with campuses in Savannah, Statesboro, and Hinesville. Within this setting, the Department of Physics and Astronomy contributes significantly to the University through scholarly endeavors, engagement of students, and outreach to the community and the region. The mission of the department of Physics and Astronomy is four-fold. First, the Department prepares its majors for an advanced degree in physics/astronomy, a career in industry, or a career as a science educator; second, the Department provides excellent instruction in introductory physics and astronomy to non-majors; third, Department faculty members conduct original research in physics/astronomy that is recognized at regional, national and international levels; fourth, the Department fosters an interest in science in the community and the region.
Position Description. Position Description. Reporting to the department chair, the lecturer in Physics position requires teaching and service responsibilities. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and teach undergraduate physics courses and labs and to be committed to including innovative methods of instruction while maintaining a teaching workload of 15 contact hours per semester. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to engage in academic advising and to participate in other departmental, college, and university services. The position is a 9-month, non-tenure-track appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. The lecturer faculty member will be appointed to an annually renewable three-year contract with renewal based upon an annual performance evaluation by the Department Chair. Reappointment of a Lecturer beyond six years of service is allowed if the individual has demonstrated exceptional teaching ability and value to the institution. A Lecturer may be promoted to a Senior Lecturer after having served a minimum of five years with successful annual performance reviews.
