Primary Function of Organization Unit: The National Science Foundation Center for Integrated Pest Management (NSFCIPM) was established in 1991 to serve a lead role in technology development, program implementation, training, and public awareness for IPM at the state, regional, and national level. NSFCIPM fosters the development and implementation of pest management programs. NSF CIPM is an Industry / University Cooperative Research Center, which works to support and further Integrated Pest Management through the evaluation of emerging technologies, information management and dissemination, environmental stewardship, estimation of economic consequences, resistance management tools and systems, and integration of disciplinary expertise. The Center manages grants programs for the USDA, develops regional and national priorities through workshops and stakeholder meetings, and develops and maintains large databases and database applications for USDA, EPA, and Ministries of Agriculture in Europe, Africa and the Caribbean.
Essential Job Duties: As a Research Associate, the primary responsibility is to prioritize exotic plant pests (arthropods and pathogens) according to their potential economic impact if they were to be introduced into the United States. The work will involve performing literature searches, reviewing and interpreting highly technical scientific information and government reports, corresponding with subject matter experts, and analyzing information to produce written reports that will then be presented to a team of analysts. The successful applicant will carry out work supporting cooperative activities of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the NSF Center for Integrated Pest Management. This work will entail the collection development, evaluation, analysis and communication of biological information.
Minimum Education/Experience: Position requires an M.S. degree in entomology, plant pathology or a related degree.
Department Required Skills: * Use of computer word processing, spreadsheet, citation manager, and other computer-related skills. * Ability to perform extensive literature reviews to acquire the most up-to-date information on plant pests with the ability to develop, evaluate and draw inferences from the data. * Ability to conceptualize and complete analyses that clearly and completely address prescribed objectives. * Ability to develop high quality written analyses that require minimal editing. * Ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a team to meet agreed upon deadlines. * Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: * Experience in risk analysis.
