Primary Function of Organization Unit: The Lucas lab is part of the Department of Molecular Biomedical Sciences (MBS) in the NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine. The MBS trains Doctors of Veterinary Medicine and graduate students interested in research-based careers focused on the discovery of new knowledge about animal and human health and disease and using those findings to enhance animal and human health and well-being. The faculty are recognized experts in the fields of cell biology and physiology, cancer biology, developmental biology, environmental science and toxicology, genomics, infectious diseases, neuroscience, pharmacology, radiology, and reproductive biology. The MBS seeks to advance veterinary medical science through innovative basic and applied research, and by mentoring and inspiring students, providing world-class clinical and diagnostic services, and offering the public the latest knowledge through innovative extension and engagement activities. Our research faculty work in state-of-the-art research facilities including a transgenic mouse facility where graduate students can participate in research projects related to mouse and animal genomics. The newly recruited Lucas lab investigates the neurobiological underpinnings of sex differences in susceptibility to neuropsychiatric illness. Women are twice as likely as men to be diagnosed with fear-, anxiety-, and mood-based psychiatric disorders, but the exclusion of female subjects in preclinical research has hindered our progress in elucidating the sex-specific neurobiological bases (and thus potential sex-specific therapeutic targets) of such illnesses. The Lucas lab utilizes cutting-edge techniques to dissect novel circuits underlying sexual dimorphism in fear-, anxiety-, and depression-related behaviors using a multifaceted, systems-based approach that combines in vivo behavioral manipulations with ex vivo electrophysiological, transcriptional, anatomical, and endocrinological analyses in mouse models.

Essential Job Duties: The laboratory of Dr. Lucas at the NC State University College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking a highly motivated, flexible, and organized Research Assistant. The applicant will be expected to independently lead and manage their own research project(s) as well as to support other lab members on various projects as needed. The successful applicant will be familiar with all techniques used in the lab, including but not limited to: * Viral-mediated neuroanatomical and electrophysiological studies. * Mouse behavior. * Immunohistochemistry. * Stereotactic injections and implants. * Confocal and light sheet microscopy. * Transcriptional profiling. Managerial duties include but are not limited to ensuring that the lab complies with all institutional requirements and certifications, orienting and training new personnel and volunteers, writing/addending IACUC protocols and annual reports, ordering supplies and animals, maintaining animal colonies, creating and maintaining tissue and chemical inventories, maintaining equipment, and organizing lab meetings. Effective written and verbal communication skills, both with the PI and other lab members, is essential. Applicant must work independently and within a team. The incumbent will be expected to spend approximately 30% time on managerial tasks and the remainder conducting research. The successful applicant is expected to commit at least 2 years to this position but preferably longer.

Minimum Education/Experience: PhD or Master's degree or equivalent in neuroscience, biology, biochemistry, biopsychology, or related field or Bachelor's degree in neuroscience, biology, biochemistry, biopsychology, or related field plus three or more years of relevant experience
