Scope of Job:

The College of Education and P-16 Integration is accepting applications for an Associate/Full Professor and Chair of the Department of Counseling to begin in fall 2018.

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 as the first major public university of the 21st century in Texas. This transformative initiative provided the opportunity to expand educational opportunities in the Rio Grande Valley, including a new School of Medicine, and made it possible for residents of the region to benefit from the Permanent University Fund – a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and other institutions.

UTRGV has campuses and off-campus research and teaching sites throughout the Rio Grande Valley including in Boca Chica Beach, Brownsville (formerly The University of Texas at Brownsville campus), Edinburg (formerly The University of Texas-Pan American campus), Harlingen, McAllen, Port Isabel, Rio Grande City, and South Padre Island. UTRGV, a comprehensive academic institution, enrolled its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine welcomed its first class in the summer of 2016.

The College of Education and P-16 Integration offers master’s programs in Bilingual Education, Reading and Literacy, Educational Leadership, Curriculum and Instruction, Special Education, School Psychology, and Counseling. We also offer Ed.D.s in Curriculum and Instruction with a specialization in Bilingual Education and in Educational Leadership. The College of Education and P-16 Integration is fully accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the Texas Education Agency (TEA).

The Department of Counseling is home to 12 full-time faculty Members, and has a graduate enrollment of approximately 200 students. The Counseling Department offers an M.Ed. in Counseling with separate tracks in School Counseling and Clinical Mental Health Counseling. The program is currently applying for CACREP accreditation, and will host a CACREP site visit early in 2018. The Department currently has eight core faculty, as defined by CACREP standards, and four non-core faculty.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Candidates must be eligible for tenure at the associate or full professor rank at UTRGV;
• Experience in CACREP Counselor Educator programs;
• Leadership experience in higher education setting (academic department or unit);
• Established record of scholarship, especially related to Counseling in culturally diverse settings;
• Experience in higher education teaching, student advisement, and external funding;
• Experience motivating faculty success in research, teaching, and service;
• Licensure as an LPC in Texas, or eligible for licensure at the time of hire.

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications:

Earned doctoral degree from an accredited institution in Counselor Education or Counseling.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in online instruction;
• Experience with successful CACREP accreditation;
• Established record of developing Counseling-related interdepartmental, interdisciplinary, or international
• Certification as a School Counselor in Texas, or eligible for certification.
