Book Designer

Job description

The University Press of Kentucky seeks a Book Designer to be responsible for the design of text, covers, and interior composition for 25 to 30 projects per year, from visual concept to print and electronic publication.
Duties for this position include: Evaluating manuscripts for structure and presentation in print and electronic formats; review cast offs and manuscript files; designing interior text, writing specs, and suppling sample layouts to compositors as needed; reviewing page proofs; and doing in-house typesetting as needed. The Book Designer will be responsible for cover, case and jacket designs for assigned titles; working internally with editorial and marketing on cover ideas, externally with rights-holders and authors for images and approvals; creating digital mechanicals for press according to printer templates; and working with print vendors on print specs, special finishes, trims, paper, and schedules.
Successful candidates will have the ability to manage multiple and overlapping projects and to monitor, meet, and accelerate schedules as needed for multiple book projects simultaneously. The position calls for a strong and versatile portfolio demonstrating knowledge of typography, design, writing thorough composition specifications; good technical knowledge of typesetting, pre-press including halftone sizing and adjustment, and black-and-white and color printing; and excellent skills in Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign (including a strong understanding of InDesign paragraph and character styles).
