Educational and Experience Requirement

Bachelor’s degree in marketing, journalism, communications or related field. Master’s degree preferred. Minimum of five years professional experience in marketing, communications or public relations with at least three years in management or supervisory role. Three years direct crisis communications experience.

Nature & Purpose of Position

The Director of Marketing and Communications works with the Associate Vice President of Marketing and Communications to strategically strengthen the effectiveness of the university’s brand with targeted constituents.

Primary Responsibilities

Provides creative direction, integration and implementation of marketing and communication initiatives as defined by annual marketing and communications strategic plans. Oversees the areas of marketing and communications including functional responsibilities such as campaign development, content development/management, public relations, publications, advertising, social media, brand management, digital/online communications, marketing automation and print services. Cultivates media and community relationships through regular contact with targeted constituencies. Oversees the creative development and placement of general advertising. Participates in the development, implementation and management of university social media plans to strategically market internally to students, faculty and staff and externally to prospective students, parents, alumni, friends, and influential leaders. Develops marketing and communication strategies for online and other web-based programs/platforms. Serves in an advisory capacity for the planning and execution of major and special events and activities that will create a favorable image of the university. Ensures brand messaging is consistent across university communications and effectively tailored for relevant audiences. Works with the departments of University Advancement, Office of the President, Admissions, Academic Colleges, and other areas across campus to develop effective marketing and communication strategies and materials. Acts as an internal consultant to bring attention and solutions to institutional priorities. Writes news stories for release to media and general public. Supervises, edits, and approves stories written by staff members. Provides direct and proactive advice, consultation, and assistance to senior leaders, as well as the University community, regarding public information matters, to include providing direct assistance in researching, providing information and developing messages. Serves as the designated spokesperson for the organization and its affiliates, if applicable. Supervises and directs department staff. Organizes and delegates work and work assignments. Communicates and works with the university community, including students, faculty, staff, potential students, alumni, donors, community, and media through traditional and electronic tools. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Other Specifications

Experience with strategic planning, creative development, brand management, advertising, digital/social media marketing, website development, graphic design management, marketing collateral management, production oversight, media relations, public relations, event management, and lead generation. Understanding of an integrated approach to branding, marketing, and communication. Crisis communication planning. Ability to use independent judgment and to gather, manage and impart information to the media and various other internal and external audiences. Experience communicating with the press and other media. Strong knowledge of local and regional media contacts and/or a proven ability to develop such relationships quickly. Ability to provide effective advice and counsel on strategic and/or critical communication issues and to exercise effective judgement. Ability to write executive-level communications for internal and external audiences. Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality. Management and resource project delegation. Project leadership and management, working with external/internal cross functional teams. Excellent written and verbal communication capabilities. Script writing, directing and production experience. Working knowledge of AP style guidelines. Relationship building, motivational and team skills. Ability to utilize electronic media in communication efforts.
