Dean of the College of Liberal Arts
Northeastern State University invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the College of Liberal Arts beginning July 2018. The COLA Dean supervises the departments of Communications and Art (Art, Communication Studies, Mass Communication, and Theatre), Languages and Literature (Cherokee, English, Foreign Languages), Social Work, Criminal Justice and Legal Studies, Social Sciences (American Studies, American Indian Studies, Geography, History, Political Science, Social Studies Education, Sociology), Military Science (ROTC), and Performing Arts (Music and Humanities), with approximately 90 fulltime faculty, 90 adjunct faculty and 14 full-time staff. The Dean will also supervise several nonacademic outreach entities including the Sequoyah Institute, Living Literature Center, Jazz Lab and the NSU Repertory Company. The Dean reports to the Provost/Vice President of Academic Affairs. NSU is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
Educational Requirements: Candidates must have an earned doctorate in a degree offered within the College and possess professional credentials and accomplishments to qualify for the rank of full professor.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Minimum of three years experience in academic administration at the level of department chair or higher, Teaching, research/scholarly achievements and service experience to qualify for a senior rank, Demonstrated record of innovative administrative leadership (department chair or above), Demonstrated experience in public and professional service, fundraising and grantsmanship, Evidence of effective interpersonal and mediation skills, Commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching and research, and to economic development, Sensitivity to gender and diversity issues and affirmative action principles, Experience utilizing technology including off-site and web-based learning.
Experience in strategic planning, accreditation, budgeting, faculty recruitment and development, assessment and evaluation, Knowledge of national models and best practices related to the disciplines represented in COLA, Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, Strong interpersonal skills with faculty, staff and student populations, Superior organizational, prioritization and self-motivation skills Essential
Enhance and pursue to realization the vision and the mission of the College, Adhere to shared governance philosophies, Recruit, retain and develop an outstanding faculty and staff, Provide vision and leadership in fiscal matters, particularly budget discipline, Pursue faculty, staff and student diversification, Develop new courses, degrees and programming consistent with the needs of the NSU service area and mission, Focus on enrollment management initiatives and program growth, Oversee program review, assessment and all related accreditations, Pursue development activities and fundraising, Enhance career services and professional opportunities for students, Foster partnerships with area high schools, colleges and universities, Prepare and manage annual budgets for the effective and efficient allocation within the college, Expand and strengthen liaisons with other educational institutions to promote articulation, communication and cooperative planning, Identify, solicit and cultivate community, alumni and governmental agencies in developing and sustaining partnerships and assessing needs, Participate in marketing strategies for the college as needed, Establish a strategic direction for the College that results in initiatives that enhance student academic success, teaching excellence and scholarship, Effectively administer and grow academic programs including curriculum development, Encourage innovation, creativity and faculty/ student partnerships/ collaborative learning, Oversight of facilities management in 13 different venues associated with COLA, Perform related duties as required or assigned
