Minimum Education/Experience: Minimum educational requirements include a doctoral degree, preferably an MD, but a PhD will be considered if the individual has appropriate academic and administrative experience. Additional requirements include a minimum of five years experience, preferably ten, in progressively responsible administrative and leadership positions, including direction of academic programs, preferably in clinical sciences. In addition, the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work cooperatively with colleagues, leaders, and staffs at all levels, and ability to work independently are all essential attributes for this position.

Job Duties: The Vice Dean serves as the second officer of the School, supporting the Dean in all activities. The Vice Dean is primarily responsible for operational aspects of all activities at the school, including but not limited to financial, academic, clinical, strategic, administrative, regional, faculty affairs, and inter-institutional programs. The Vice Dean serves as the Dean's principal representative in meetings and functions as appropriate. The Vice Dean serves in the role of Dean in the absence of the dean. The goal of the Vice Dean is to support the work of the Dean in achieving success in all School Programs. The Vice Dean coordinates operational and strategic aspects of the Brody School of Medicine with the Dean, serves as liaison between the Dean, Brody School of Medicine department chairs and Brody School of Medicine Assistant and Associate Deans, and any other duties assigned by the Dean. Oversees the work assigned to Assistant and Associate Deans. Serves as a resource for Department Chairs who report to the Dean and provide coordination between and among departments. Serves as an ex-officio, non-voting member on all appropriate school committees and board. Chairs such committees and task forces as assigned by the Dean. Participates in programs and activities for the Association of American Medical Colleges (AMMC) commensurate with the role of Vice Dean. Renders decisions on operational issues for the Dean and has signature authority for the Dean. Responsible for advising the Dean on appropriate Brody School of Medicine policy development, implementation, and interpretation of those policies not specifically assigned to an Assistant or Associate Dean. Advises the Dean on planning and policy matters as they impact national, state, regional, and/or international trends, policies, and regulations. Responds to requests for institutional data from the university community and external constituencies in collaboration with the ECU News Bureau and other entities as appropriate. Advises the Dean of opportunities for overseeing the development of interdisciplinary health profession programs based on national trends. Assists the Dean in the planning and implementation of ECU and UNC Programs relevant to the School. Performs other duties as assigned by the Dean.
