Primary Function of Organization Unit: NC Science Olympiad is a non-profit with the mission to attract and retain K-12 students in the STEM pipeline. Every year NCSO hosts tournaments on university, community college, and public school campuses across the state. These tournaments are rigorous academic interscholastic competitions that consist of a series of different hands-on, interactive, challenging and inquiry-based events that are well balanced between the various disciplines of biology, earth science, environmental science, chemistry, physics, engineering and technology.
Essential Job Duties: The Development Officer will play a key role in the writing and development of materials for support of the NCSO program as well as the upcoming 2020 National Science Olympiad competition to be held at NC State. The scope of this work requires the Development Officer to communicate the impact of individual and corporate support to help build a culture of philanthropy for NCSO. The Development Officer will develop materials to support our coaches and regional directors, create newsletters and other media pieces including instructional videos, as well as showcase the importance of philanthropy in order to motivate prospective donors while building strong relationships across the state. This includes creating marketing materials and researching funding sources or solicit sponsor support for the Science House to function and host the 2020 National Tournament. The researching and solicitation of funding requires grant writing, brochure creation, social media pieces and other marketing tools.
Minimum Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment and at least two years of relevant writing experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Department Required Skills: An ability to communicate the Olympiad story through a variety of communication outlets. Demonstrated excellence in writing and editing for marketing, publications, and/or public communications. Ability to set schedules, prioritize multiple tasks and effectively manage deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Flexibility, drive, and willingness to work as a team player to meet organizational goals. Customer service oriented in working effectively and comfortably with constituents and stakeholders. Computer, web, and social media proficiency.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Experience with philanthropy and nonprofits preferred.
