Primary Function of Organization Unit: The Natural Learning Initiative (NLI) is a research and design assistance unit in the College of Design at NC State University. NLI is funded by research grants, training, and design assistance education projects from a wide range of clients interested in improving outdoor environments for children and families. Current clients include childcare centers, children's museums, schools, botanical gardens, and park systems. The majority of clients are in North Carolina. Comprehensive projects (combining design assistance, training, and research) are supported by industry and foundations such as the Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation, John Rex Endowment, and Kate B. Reynolds. NLI's design assistance and education work represents a direct implementation of the land-grant mission of NC State University.
Essential Job Duties: The main goal of the Professional Development Program Assistant is to assist with professional development activities, project implementation, and distance education programs supported by the Natural Learning Initiative (NLI) sponsored programs in the area of design for children and family environments.
Department Required Skills: Consistent attention to detail and effective time management skills. Excellent social relation skills and ability to communicate effectively with faculty, students, clients, sponsors, and funders in written and oral form. Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), or similar software.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Bachelor's degree in Community Sciences, Social Service, Parks and Recreation or related field. At least four years of professional experience in academic, non-profit, or children's organization in project assistance, family programs, and/or event coordination roles. Knowledge of data base management software (e.g. FileMaker) and distance education interfaces. Basic skills in website development and/or management, and graphic software such as In-Design and Photoshop.
