Job Summary In conjunction with the Portuguese Flagship Program (PFP) Director, the Associate Director will manage both the domestic and overseas programs. The Associate Director is fiscally responsible for the $700,000 annual budget in accordance with Federal regulations and University policies. The PFP is a unique language program funded by the Department of Defense to support the development of proficient language ability in UGA undergraduate students from any major on campus who aspire to become global professionals. The PFP encompasses both a domestic and an overseas (study abroad) experiential learning component founded on innovative research-based pedagogy in second language acquisition. General responsibilities for this position include, but aren't limited to: Experiential Learning - Utilize Backward Design methodology to assist Director and other Flagship faculty with development and implementation of proficiency-based language acquisition curriculum founded on ACTFL proficiency standards in all UGA and Federal University of Sao Joao Del Rei (UFSJ) Portuguese language courses. - Assist Director with ongoing professional development on pedagogically sound teaching practices for both domestic and overseas faculty, instructors, and tutors. Student Affairs - Organize and implement a strategic recruitment plan to attract and retain a diverse group of students from all UGA colleges to the PFP. - Advise students throughout their 4-year participation in the program to be sure they are successfully enrolling in and completing Portuguese courses required for the PFP while simultaneously completing all coursework necessary for their undergraduate major. Outreach - Provide leadership for all K-12 Outreach projects within the PFP. - Serve as a liaison between the PFP and K-12 School district World Language Coordinators and K-12 teachers to assist Director with the development of online courses, benchmark and end-of-course assessments, and proficiency-based curriculum. Program Building - Collaborate with the National Security Education Program to assist with the development and implementation of a second Portuguese Flagship Program at a partner institution in the United States. - Serve as a liaison between the new Portuguese Flagship Program and UFSJ to funnel Flagship students from both U. S. institutions to the study abroad program the PFP has established at UFSJ. Administration and Reporting - Responsible for the development, administration, and oversight of annual domestic and overseas budgets totaling approximately $700,000. - Prepare and submit all required reports and invoices to the National Security Education Program's program administrator - Institute for International Education. Safety and Security - Update and maintain emergency plan of action for Capstone students studying abroad in Brazil. - Serve as point of contact 24/7 to handle emergencies for Capstone students in Brazil. Minimum Qualifications This position requires a PhD or EdD in Romance Languages, Linguistics, Language Pedagogy, Curriculum Design or a related field OR a Master's degree combined with three years of related experience. Fluency in professional Portuguese is required.
