Educational and Experience Requirement

Bachelor’s degree in Art, Sculpture, Ceramics, or a related field. One year of experience working in a sculpture or ceramics studio. Previous experience managing an academic arts studio facility desirable. A combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.

Nature & Purpose of Position

The Department of Art at Sam Houston State University invites applications for a staff person to oversee Sculpture, Ceramic and other studio facilities. The staff person will work closely with faculty to maintain art studios and coordinate and supervise student assistants.

Primary Responsibilities

Manages studios and labs to include supervising student workers. Maintains inventories, orders and receives supplies, equipment, chemicals and other studio supplies. Works closely with the Department of Environmental Health, Safety and Risk Management when developing safety and training programs and/or standards. Develops and oversees the safety program for labs and studios in the Department of Art. Ensures facilities and equipment meet safety standards. Provides training in safe operation of wood and metal working equipment for students. Performs maintenance, repairs and replaces tools and equipment. Ensures facilities and equipment meet safety standards. Supervises mixing of ceramic glazes, and the loading, firing, and maintenance of gas and electric kilns. Assists faculty with special projects related to facilities and provides instructional support for the painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, photography, computer animation, and graphic design areas. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Other Specifications

Serves as the departmental liaison to the Department of Environmental Health, Safety and Risk Management. Position requires knowledge of welding, metal fabrication, and woodworking techniques, tools, and equipment; and basic ceramic techniques, including but not limited to kiln firing, proper mixing of glazes and mold making. Must have the ability to anticipate problems and deal with them promptly and effectively. Strong communications skills, the ability to supervise student employees and provide workshops and safety training to faculty and students is required. Position requires the ability to lift and carry 15 to 45 pounds, reach above shoulders, distinguish shades and colors, work around machinery with moving parts, and work with solvents, grease and oils. Position requires knowledge of electricity and the ability to detect vibrations and hear noises. Position works closely with others and independently. Position works in a shop without air conditioning. Alertness and careful attention in the performance of duties is required to prevent injury to self and others.
