New York University’s Expository Writing Program (EWP) invites applications for a number of full-time lecturers to teach intensive first-year writing courses, beginning September 1, 2018, subject to budgetary and administrative approval. Current program needs include, but are not limited to, expertise in teaching English-language learners, international students, and heritage-language speakers.
These are full time, non-tenure track, renewable positions. Initial appointment is for three years, subject to successful annual review; subsequent appointment is for a three-year term, with the possibility for promotion. Lecturers will teach six courses per academic year, to be distributed 3-3 or 4-2 across the fall and spring semesters as needed. A commitment to service is also welcome. All Expository Writing Program faculty are expected to participate in faculty development; new faculty are required to attend a week-long intensive faculty orientation before the semester begins.
EWP provides first-year writing courses for students at NYU’s College of Arts and Science; Meyer College of Nursing; Silver School of Social Work; Steinhardt School of Education, Culture, and Human Development; Stern School of Business; Tandon School of Engineering; Tisch School of the Arts. Individual sections typically draw from multiple schools.
Successful applicants will be strong writers who have demonstrated outstanding mastery of writing in their field and excellence in college-level teaching, and who have carefully considered the role of writing in undergraduate education. We welcome and encourage applicants from across the disciplines.
Preferred qualifications include any combination of the following:
- 5 or more years’ experience teaching composition, creative writing, or other writing-intensive courses as the instructor of record;
- 3 or more years’ experience working with multilingual students, including both international students and domestic speakers of heritage languages, particularly in composition and expository writing;
- TESOL certification and/or a research focus on multilingual learners;
- experience teaching in a diverse, multilingual environment.
- PhD, MFA, or EdD (ABD considered, subject to successful completion of the PhD before the appointment begins);
- 3 years’ experience teaching composition, creative writing, or other writing-intensive courses as the instructor of record.
