La Salle University seeks applications and nominations for the position of Dean, School of Arts and Sciences. Located in Philadelphia, PA, La Salle is an urban, comprehensive, Catholic, Lasallian university in the tradition of the Brothers of the Christian Schools with over 5,100 undergraduate and graduate students. One of three schools of the University, the School of Arts and Sciences has 19 departments, 145 full-time faculty, 1,986 undergraduate and 677 graduate students. Reporting to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean is the chief executive and academic officer of the School. The Dean will provide active leadership in the promotion, direction, and support of the educational and research activities of the School; in the fostering of a high level of morale among faculty and staff; and in the encouragement of enthusiasm for learning among students. The Dean will lead a vision for the direction of the School of Arts and Sciences. The Dean will understand the place and value of a liberal arts education in the 21st century, and her/his vision will define the School’s role in providing this education to La Salle students.
The Dean will lead the School of Arts and Sciences by encouraging excellence; recognizing achievement; recruiting and retaining exemplary faculty, staff, and students; and collaborating with stakeholders in designing an innovative and distinctive School-based strategic plan that aligns with the recently completed University strategic plan, Momentum 2022, http://www.lasalle.edu/momentum/. The Dean will have general administrative and financial responsibility for the School and be charged to ensure compliance with accreditation standards; to participate in community outreach; to collaborate in fundraising activities; to assist with marketing and enrollment; to promote and increase interdisciplinary teaching, research, and service; and to advance innovation and collaboration within the School and across the University.
The successful candidate will possess: the ability to work within a diverse environment; evidence of fostering excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service in undergraduate and graduate programs; a commitment to strengthening teaching practice and technique and increasing student learning outcomes across the School, to actively supporting and encouraging faculty, to promoting faculty and student success, and to leading assessment of learning outcomes. The successful candidate will have a background of at least five years of substantive leadership with demonstrated excellent communication, financial, and human resource management skills; collaborative skills in developing and working with a strong leadership team including department chairs, program directors, faculty, staff, and students; and a track record showing commitment to diversity and building diverse leadership teams.
An earned doctorate, demonstrated accomplishments as a teacher and scholar in an arts or science field, and an established record of research and publications sufficient for a tenured appointment in the School of Arts and Sciences are required.
