Primary Function of Organization Unit: The NC State Veterinary Hospital (VH), established in 1983, is one of the highest rated veterinary academic medical centers in the country, serving communities throughout North Carolina as well as many other states. The hospital staffs over twenty clinical services with board certified specialists that are nationally and even internationally renowned, ensuring the VH is on the cutting edge of veterinary medicine. Patients benefit from the combined expertise of multiple specialists utilizing a team approach to patient health care. Each year, nearly 34,000 patients are treated in the VH. The VH provides compassionate care, state of the art specialty health care, expert clinical instruction for 4th-year veterinary students from College of Veterinary Medicine, and ongoing investigation of innovative techniques and procedures to further advance the field of veterinary medicine.
Essential Job Duties: The incumbent manages the day to day operation of the Equine Health Center (EHC) at Southern Pines. This is an 80-acre facility horse farm which boards 30-35 horses. The EHC provides various services to the community to include Theriogenology Services, equine import quarantine services (CEM), and veterinary laboratory services. Works with the faculty and staff to ensure that the students have an excellent teaching experience.
Department Required Skills: Graduation from an AVMA fully accredited two- or four-year Veterinary Technician program. Experience in working with horses in a medical setting Strong managerial, communication, and organizational skills.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Bachelors or an Associates degree in veterinary technician medicine. 5-7 years working as an equine veterinary technician. 3-5 years of experience in a supervisory capacity. NC Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) or ability to obtain NC Registration within 6 months of the date of hire. NC RVT exam eligibility requirements include graduation from an AVMA-accredited veterinary technician program and a passing score on the National Veterinary Technician Exam.
