Primary Function of Organization Unit: NC State Extension is the university's educational outreach provider. Housed in CALS, NC State Extension translates research-based knowledge in the areas of agriculture, food and nutrition, and 4-H youth development into everyday solutions that help keep North Carolina growing. With local centers in all 100 counties and the Eastern Band of Cherokee, NC State Extension also works in tandem with N.C. A&T State University, as well as federal and local governments, to form a strategic partnership called N.C. Cooperative Extension. The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) Communications team leads the development and execution efforts of strategic, multi-platform content that clearly and measurably advances the mission, vision and brand of CALS, NC State Extension and NC State University. CALS Communications applies a fully integrated suite of skills ; communications strategy, marketing, web design, content creation, graphics and videography ; to support CALS strategic communications and marketing plans. CALS Communications also provides communications consultation and services for the departments, centers and programs of the college.
Essential Job Duties: The NC State Extension Marketing Communications Specialist will be both proactive and adaptive in helping to drive a strategic marketing and communication plan for NC State Extension, while adhering to the operating procedures and organizational priorities set forth collectively by the NC State Extension director, CALS chief communications officer, and Extension's director of marketing and communication. The successful candidate will work with Extension administration, marketing/communication leadership, and program leaders to define and execute effective communications strategies that include digital stories, social media strategy and content, email campaigns, print collateral, coordination of videos, graphic design and publications, and other communications as needed. This new position will help NC State Extension to further build its brand and successfully drive its organizational objectives through an expanded marketing and communications function, serving as a conduit for state-level strategic goals and local/program level communication opportunities and needs. This individual will establish and maintain relationships with NC State Extension faculty, staff and administrators, employing a consultative approach to help analyze current communications efforts, determine communications effectiveness, and create communications that align with programmatic and organizational objectives. This individual will also work with the CALS Communications team to coordinate a variety of NC State Extension marketing and communications projects and services when needed, helping ensure projects achieve defined, measurable results, on time and on budget. While the Extension marketing communications specialist reports to the NC State Extension director, this position regularly works alongside and under the guidance of the NC State Extension director of marketing and communication as the organization's central Extension communications unit, housed within CALS Communications under the day-to-day supervision and leadership of the college's chief communications officer. Responsibilities include: - Leads and collaborates communications discovery efforts for NC State Extension programs and key organizational objectives - identifying communications priorities, target audiences, appropriate communications platforms, available resources and timelines. - Leads development and implementation of comprehensive, integrated strategic communication plans that advance NC State Extension mission and brand, highlight the impact of our work, and promote campus and county efforts that create prosperity across the state. - Serves as lead NC State Extension content strategist and producer, helping tell strategic stories that align with defined communication plans. - Serves as technical liaison with Extension IT, CALS IT and other technology providers and contractors, helping NC State Extension clients identify, troubleshoot and implement defined digital communications strategies and technologies as deemed appropriate. - Works in collaboration with CALS Communications project management resources to coordinate designers, marketing writers, social media specialists and videographers to create effective integrated communications. - Assists Extension marketing and communication director with developing "brand ambassadors" throughout the organization, as well as to help ensure all communications and collateral are aligned with NC State Extension and NC State University brand standards.
Department Required Skills: - Experience in marketing communications preferably from a fee-for-service environment. - Experience with project management from conception, design, development, content population and deployment. - Knowledge of website usability, HTML, WordPress, Adobe Creative Suite. - Effective interpersonal skills; must be able to establish and maintain relationships with diverse external and internal audiences. - Ability to work with limited supervision, proven writing and editing experience as well as an understanding of web and social media metrics to inform editorial and brand development. -Ability to strategize multi-channel content to ensure audience engagement and achievement of goals. -Ability to meet tight deadlines. Must be able to handle multiple projects. -Ability to plan, write and edit content for a diverse portfolio of projects and presentations
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: -Bachelor's degree plus 5-10 years of experience in journalism, public relations, marketing or related field, including experience developing and implementing digital communications and marketing strategies. - Experience working with a higher education strategic marking team. - Strategic skills for analyzing and measuring communications and marketing effectiveness. - Ability to collaborate with creative teams to conceptualize and execute content strategy for digital campaigns and interactive projects, as well as print collateral and special events.
Necessary Licenses and Certifications: A valid drivers license is required for travel. NC drivers license required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained. Travel will be required in a state or personal vehicle throughout the state and neighboring states to perform regular duties of position. Position is a centrally located position but with purview for the entire Extension operation, which is located in all 100 counties and the Eastern Band of Cherokee.
