Primary Function of Organization Unit: Crop & Soil Sciences is a Department with diverse disciplines that encompass research, extension and teaching related to soil science and theory and the genetic improvement, production and utilization of agronomic and turf-grass crops. Research in basic and applied science and the engagement and technology transfer to public and private sector practitioners.
Essential Job Duties: This is an Assistant Professor / Crop Production and Management Specialist (Soybeans) position in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences at NC State University, Raleigh, NC. This is a 12-month, tenure track position with an appointment split that is 90% Extension and 10% Teaching. The position will develop a Soybean Extension program to serve the soybean producers, NC Soybean Producers Association Inc., industry and government partners. The position will be an integral member of existing soybean research and extension faculty developing recommendations, delivering technical training to producers and county agents, troubleshooting problems in production, and developing relationships that benefit the soybean production industry. The position will deliver information through different media outlets at grower meetings, county agent training's, field days, grower and consultant training's, and farm visits. The position will also publish, update, and revise a NC Soybean Production Guide. The position will develop an applied research and extension program to promote the long-term sustainability of North Carolina soybean growers. Potential applied research might include 1) evaluating new products and practices, including precision agriculture; 2) management strategies for full season and double-crop soybeans 3) adapting crop productivity to a shifting climate, 4) increasing short- and long-term farm profitability, 5) collaboration with the Director of the Official Variety Testing program to evaluate cultivars in multiple environments 6) on-farm research and demonstration on row width, plant population, and planting date, and 7) integrated management of herbicide resistant weeds and other pests. The position will be expected to work closely with faculty in other departments to assist in dissemination of integrated pest management strategies to growers and other clientele. The position is also expected to generate external funding from multiple sources to support extension and applied research programs. The position will present research data results at state, regional and national symposia and meetings. The position will also teach a Soybean Production course in the Agricultural Institute (2-year Associate Degree Program) and at the undergraduate level. Minimum Education/Experience: * PhD in Agronomy, Plant Science, Crop Science, Soil Science. or a closely related discipline.
Department Required Skills: * Must have a demonstrated ability to publish peer-reviewed research in an internationally recognized journal. * Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: * Experience in Soybean production. * Experience in obtaining extramural funding.
Necessary Licenses and Certifications: * A valid drivers license is required for travel. NC drivers license required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
