Duties: University of Pennsylvania Press, publisher of trade and scholarly books, seeks Acquisitions Assistant to provide comprehensive editorial and administrative support for acquiring editors, who seek out scholarly and semi-popular books for publication by the Press. Reports to the Editor-in-Chief. Communicating by letter, telephone, fax, and email with authors, readers, agents, foreign publishers, and governmental agencies under differing degrees of supervision by the editors. Monitoring status of manuscripts-in-progress and expert readers' reports. Preparing manuscripts for editing and production. This includes analyzing editorial, typographical, illustration, and copyright complexities in book manuscripts as well as resolving editorial problems. Arranging semimonthly staff and monthly faculty editorial meetings.
Recruiting, training, and supervising work-study students and interns in execution of routine office tasks. Preparing and processing contracts; other general clerical functions as needed. Promoting smooth and efficient relations with authors and with other members of the Press staff. Occasionally traveling to attend academic conferences and meetings.

Qualifications: A High School Diploma or GED is required and 1 year to 2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. College degree
highly preferred. Requires excellent oral, written, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Strong computer aptitude and knowledge of PC hardware and word-processing software essential. Internship or other background in scholarly publishing desirable. Other computer skills and office experience a plus.
