SCHOOL OF THEATRE AND DANCE

POSITION:   Assistant or Associate Professor of Directing/Acting

RESPONSIBILITIES:  Illinois State University seeks an experienced teacher/artist to teach directing and acting in the School of Theatre and Dance. This tenure-track faculty member will teach a variety of acting and directing courses in the School’s large undergraduate program as well as the MFA Directing program. The successful candidate is expected to direct in a variety of genres and styles within the School of Theatre and Dance production program. The opportunity to direct for and/or act in the Illinois Shakespeare Festival may be available. The successful candidate should be a person of vision and energy with a commitment to collaboration and collegiality. Other duties include serving on School, College, and University committees. 

QUALIFICATIONS:  Terminal degree in theatre or a closely related field is required. Other required qualifications include previous university-level teaching experience and a commitment to an ongoing professional directing and/or acting career. State law mandates demonstrable oral proficiency in the English language as a requirement for this position.

RANK AND SALARY:  Tenure-track, nine-month appointment at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

THE SCHOOL OF THEATRE AND DANCE:  The School of Theatre and Dance produces a 10-show season in two facilities: a 525-seat proscenium space and a recently renovated space that can be adapted to a 125-seat thrust or 150-seat arena. The School has over 30 faculty/staff, and over 300 students enrolled in the BA/BS, MA/MS and MFA degrees. Areas of undergraduate study include Acting, Design/Production, Theatre Education, Theatre and Film Studies, Dance, and Dance Education. MFA areas of study include Directing and Design (Scenic, Costume, and Lighting). The School maintains membership in URTA, with programs accredited by NAST.

THE COLLEGE:    The School of Theatre and Dance is located within the College of Fine Arts, which also includes the School of Music, the School of Art, and the Program in Arts Technology. In addition, the College supports the Illinois Shakespeare Festival, the Center for the Performing Arts, and the University Galleries.

THE UNIVERSITY: Illinois State University is located in the growing twin cities of Bloomington and Normal, with a population of approximately 125,000 and conveniently located approximately two hours from both Chicago and St. Louis.
