The successful candidate will be a member of the four-person Computer Science Laboratory (CSL) staff. The CSL supports the computing facilities of the Duke Department of Computer Science. The CSL is responsible for maintaining a distributed network of approximately 500 UNIX, Windows, and Mac systems. Most of these are Dell systems running Linux with most servers running Linux on the x86 architecture.
The primary responsibilities for this position are:
1. UNIX System Administration
The primary responsibility of this position is the administration of the department's UNIX computing environment. These duties are shared with the other members of the CSL staff, and include the following tasks: • Creation and management of user accounts. • Management of computing resources (e.g. disk space). • Management of backups. • Management of Network services (e.g. DNS, NIS, WWW, NFS, NTP, CUPS, and CIFS). • Diagnosis and resolution of UNIX, Windows, and Mac system problems. • Installation and maintenance of computing hardware (e.g. computers, printers, or devices). • Installation, configuration, and administration of public domain and commercial software. • Management of the department network infrastructure • Implementation of system software that aids in the use and administration of workstations and servers. • Maintenance of web site including html, PHP, MySQL, and other web based programming languages in a Drupal environment. • Web programming including; web forms, database-backed content, and other tools to satisfy the needs of the department.
This position will participate with the CSL staff in the planning and development of the CSL facilities by discussing development options and making purchase recommendations to the Laboratory Director.
3. Instruction and Collaboration
From time to time, this position will be called upon to teach individuals or small groups in the use of the department UNIX workstations or available software applications. In addition, this position will be required to interact with other departmental and external faculty, students, and staff in a variety of ways.
