Postdoctoral Research Associate
Working Title: Postdoctoral Research Associate
Position Type: Professional Research Staff
Department: Department of Medicine, Endocrinology and Metabolism
Posting Date: 10-12-2017
The lab of Dr. Heather Ferris in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Virginia is seeking applicants for a postdoctoral position focused on studying the impact of diabetes on cognitive function using animal and cell models of disease. The incumbent will be responsible for developing and implementing experiments in specified areas of research and will write grant proposals, manuscripts for publication, and abstracts for presentation at national and international meetings. Supervision and instruction of graduate and undergraduate students is also required.
Previous work in our lab has demonstrated that diabetes results in an impairment of brain cholesterol synthesis. We went on to show that genetic lowering of brain cholesterol levels leads to metabolic and cognitive disorders in mice independent of diabetes (Suzuki, PLoS Biology: PMC3621654, Ferris, PNAS: PMC28096339).
Potential projects include: 1) determining the role of the insulin receptor in the development of Alzheimer's pathology, 2) further defining the impact of disrupted cholesterol metabolism on various cell populations in the brain in the presence and absence of Alzheimer's disease, 3) investigate changes in brain energetics in knock out and disease models, and 4) mechanistic studies of oxidized cholesterol species in the brain which may be an intermediary between diabetes and Alzheimer's disease.
Candidates must have a PhD and/or an MD in Neurosciences, Physiology or a related field in hand by the start date. The successful candidate will have a background in neuroscience, as well as experience in conducting independent research, preparing manuscripts and supervising research trainees. The successful applicant should also be highly motivated, independent, creative, and possess a strong work ethic and critical thinking abilities. Candidates with fewer than 3 years of postdoctoral training are preferred. This position is restricted and contingent upon funding.
To apply, visit https://jobs.virginia.edu and search on Posting Number 0621890. Complete a Candidate Profile on-line; attach a CV, cover letter, and contact information for three references. The position will remain open until filled.
