Reporting to the Director of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS), the Assistant Director provides leadership for ISSS intercultural programs, non-immigration support services, and University/community outreach. The Assistant Director develops and implements programs and support services to promote international student and scholar success, and to prepare University faculty and staff to support the international student population.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Participates in the planning, development, design, implementation and evaluation of programs and support services to help international students adjust to life at the University and meet academic goals. Develops and conducts ISSS programs to support international student success, including orientation programs, and initiates collaboration with University offices and student groups to improve opportunities for student cross-cultural engagement and participation in University life.
  • Coordinates processes and develops mechanisms to evaluate programs and international student needs, and make recommendations for improvement to international student services. Conducts research on University services and student groups, to identify possible areas of duplicated services, as well as potential areas for collaboration.
  • Serves as an expert resource and point of contact for international students and University faculty/staff to resolve concerns related to international student well-being and non-immigration matters related to academic, language, and cultural transitions. Refers to other University services and resources as appropriate. Collaborates with University offices to identify ways to increase international student participation in University support programs, and develop new collaborative programs and initiatives.
  • Develops and implements methods to market ISSS programs and events, and communicate information essential to international student success. May include management of ISSS social media pages, listserv communication, website and forms content, workshop content.
  • Responsible for the completion of individual projects, as assigned.
  • Develops and conducts workshops and seminars to train University faculty and staff on developing intercultural competencies to prepare them to work with international students.
  • May be responsible for various administrative tasks to implement ISSS programs and initiatives.
  • Meets with students and scholars during regular office hours for assistance to resolve non-immigration matters.
  • May represent ISSS at meetings with other University offices or external groups.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications
  1. Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, Higher Education/Student Affairs, Psychology, Intercultural Communication/Studies, or related field.
  2. Minimum three years' professional experience working with international students in a Student Affairs, Counseling or International Programs context.
  3. Comprehensive understanding of the international student experience and the proven ability to apply theories of intercultural communication, cultural adjustment and student development to carry out program objectives.
  4. Proven ability to evaluate, problem-solve and troubleshoot to resolve difficult situations.
  5. Experience handling sensitive information.
  6. Excellent written, spoken, cross-cultural and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Experience working with international students in university or college setting.
  2. Experience studying, working or living abroad.
  3. Knowledge of one or more second languages.

Appointment Terms

This is a full-time, permanent 12-month position and includes a comprehensive benefits package.
