Job Summary This position is a two year appointment for a research technician in the tree fruit entomology lab at the University of Georgia located on the Athens Campus. The position will provide support for research and extension activities within the tree fruit entomology laboratory. The candidate will be responsible for working directly with the supervisor to design, implement, and carry out entomological field experiments at off-campus research and commercial farms. Additionally, the candidate will be responsible for conducting laboratory assays, and as such, must have knowledge and experience using basic laboratory equipment. These experiments will likely involve insecticides, so previous experience with insecticide application and the willingness to get one's applicator license is desired. The candidate should have a basic understanding of insect biology and identification and be able to learn to identify known and potential insect orchard pests and their associated damage. Other duties would include routine orchard management, working with and providing assistance to farm crew for fruit plot maintenance. Must be able to help design experiments, as well as collect and assemble data in a cohesive format. Thus experience with spreadsheets (e.g. Excel) is requires and proficiency in analyzing data using SAS, JMP or "R" statistical programs is suggested. The candidate will be required to supervise and train hourly employees and interact with cooperating growers and extension personnel. The candidate must be able to work independently and make safe, quick decisions when applicable. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree and no experience or equivalent combination required. Area-specific certification may be required and training will be provided as appropriate (i.e. UGA HazMat training).
