The Business Advisor is one who:

Is committed to working with their designated client base in a facilitative and supportive manner to identify their business needs and provide or obtain appropriate assistance;

Works in a collaborative and supportive manner within the classroom and in advising sessions to help the client complete the program and program deliverables;

Participates in measurement and evaluation activities as needed (including validation); and

Is dedicated to the program outcomes of job creation and revenue generation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

1. Advising

a) Meets with clients on an individual basis to guide business growth with the final meeting dedicated to quality control of the growth plan Assists clients in learning how to use professional services (advisors) appropriately;

b) Works with clients to connect them to external Business Support Services (local entrepreneurship ecosystem) as needed for specialty services;

c) Works with clients to understand, collect and apply business metrics to support growth;

d) Assists within the classroom to coordinate group activities and support faculty;

e) Helps clients apply course content to their businesses;

f) Participates in Client Support System meetings to support client business growth; and

g) Attends all modules, clinics and program events at Houston Community College to support client learning.2. Community Building

a) Participates in a quarterly call for Business Advisors with national partners (exchange of updates, best practices, new challenges, etc.);

b) Networks with business support services to enhance the local entrepreneurship ecosystem and to advance program recruitment;

c) Engages in client alumni program events as needed; and

d) Assists in client recruiting as directed.

3. Assessment

a) Participates in assessment of clients through measurement and evaluation activities; and

b) Participates in assessment of program through team debriefing and review process.


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential duties and responsibilities listed above. The qualifications listed below are representative of the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.


Bachelor's degree in business, entrepreneurship or related field required.


Five (5) years related work experience in entrepreneurial roles or small business advising.

Must have participated in or personally started up a new business.

  1. Computer proficiency in Word Processing, Spreadsheets and Internet technologies required;
  2. Proven ability to work in a team environment and manage multiple tasks efficiently and effectively;
  3. Strong spoken and written communication skills;
  4. Ability to work a flexible schedule;
  5. High personal and professional ethical standards;
  6. Broad business perspective and proven ability to generate key insights from experience, industry information resources, and key contacts; and
  7. Thorough knowledge of business, entrepreneurship and industry.
