Job Summary:

This nine-month faculty position will begin in August of 2018. Primary duties include teaching applied voice and directing choral ensembles, as well as other classroom teaching duties as needed by the music program. The successful candidate is expected to engage the community in outreach and promote the musical arts in Sheridan County and the surrounding region. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, participation in academic advising, registration, and maintaining regular office hours. It is expected that all instructors participate in committee work, the continuous improvement of the music program, and student recruitment and retention activities.  The instructor will supervise students and serve as music student advisor. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Command of rehearsal and performance technique in leading music ensembles.
  • Proficiency in choral and vocal pedagogy.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in working cooperatively with the variety of artists, technicians, and students involved in music and other disciplines.
  • Established and active in the art of solo and/or collaborative musical performance.
  • Evidence of a strong commitment to the teaching of music as a part of an academically rigorous undergraduate education.
  • Evidence of strong interpersonal communication and management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach, supervise, and mentor students via courses, ensemble performances, private lessons, and advising.
  • Candidate should have an ongoing desire to contribute to the collegiate life of the institution.
  • Thorough understanding and commitment to the core curriculum of the AFA music degree (written and aural theory sequence, historical survey sequence, and class piano sequence).
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and with a diverse population representing a wide range of abilities and ages.
  • Candidate should be adept at partnering with various members of the local community.
  • Candidate can work for an organization believing in a culture of inquiry, freedom of speech, respect for diversity in its many forms, caring regard for colleagues and students, and shared ownership through collaboration.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A master's degree in music from an accredited institution with emphasis in vocal performance or a related discipline. Doctoral degree preferred.
  • Broad knowledge of traditional and contemporary vocal and choral repertoire. Experience with chamber choir and vocal jazz ensembles preferred.
  • Evidence of activity as performer and conductor. Experience in choral arranging and/or composition desired.
  • Basic piano keyboard skills.
  • Basic proficiency with computer notation programs.
  • Strong understanding of music theory and Western music history and literature.
  • Three-years of post-secondary teaching experience.
  • Community college experience is preferred, and a commitment to the community college sensibility is essential.
  • Experience working with stakeholders in and outside of a college or university.

Duties Include:

Teaching music courses and private studio lessons; rehearsing ensembles.
Organizing and conducting performances; recruitment of music majors.
College and professional activities including committee work and contributing to the collegiate life of the institution.
Advising music majors.
