Director, Major Gifts
I. JOB OVERVIEW
Job Description Summary:
As members of the Division of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR), we all work together to advance its mission to serve all constituencies of the university through alumni and donor engagement. We believe that fundraising is everyone's job. And everyone means all DAR staff, including staff in alumni relations, administrative, advancement services, as well as university leadership and volunteers. To this end DAR is seeking a Director, Major Gifts that will serve as the lead major gift officer and assume direct management of the Milken Institute School of Public Health (GWSPH) major gift donors and prospects. In addition to managing other major gift officers, the Director will maintain a pool of 50-80 prospects; conduct 8-10 monthly visits; provide coordination in the development of strategies for soliciting leadership-level gifts from alumni, parents, faculty, and friends in support of the GWSPH; and cultivate, solicit, and close major gifts.
The Director will report directly to the Assistant Dean (AD) and Assistant Vice President (AVP) for Development at the Milken Institute School of Public Health.
-Collaborates with the Assistant Dean and Assistant Vice President for Development to support and contribute to a sustainable development program that will broaden GWSPH's base of support. Directly manages future GWSPH major gift officers by providing direction and professional development opportunities for its staff. Provides operation leadership in the absence of the Assistant Vice President.
-Manages a portfolio of 50-80 of GWSPH's top major gift prospects and is actively involved in the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of top-tier GWSPH prospects. Works closely with the AVP/GWSPH, GWSPH leadership, faculty and volunteers for the identification, cultivation and solicitation of top-tier GWSPH prospects.
-Provides support to the Dean and leadership volunteers as needed, including but not limited to producing and sharing briefing materials, accompanying on donor visits, and drafting proposals and correspondence.
-Performs other work related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are related to the position.Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 6 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree in a relevant area of study plus 4 years of relevant experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:
Progressive experience in institutional advancement in higher education, preferably in complex academic and research institutions. Demonstrated success in cultivating and soliciting gifts at the six figure level. Exceptional communication skills and outstanding writing competences with an attention to details. Experience in prospect management/tracking, developing and executing prospect strategies that have led to successful gift solicitations of $100,000 or more. Desire and ability to work as part of a team and willingness to collaborate with stakeholders across campus. Ability to work some evenings and weekends. Demonstrated understanding of the field of public health. Ability to travel for prospect visits and events.Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus three to six years of relevant professional experience.
- Masters Degree preferred. Degree requirements may be substituted for an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Demonstrated ability to manage development staff a plus.
