Perform and participate in a variety of technical tasks and activities related to the care of various animals.

Work Performed

1. Primary point of contact for Surgery a) Serve as primary technician for all surgical services b) Maintain surgery pavilion and radiology by DLAR standards c) Update surgery board and calendar as request are received or changed d) Communicate with Clinical Technician for procedures scheduled in surgery that require clinical responsibilities

2. Order Oxygen/CO2 for the surgical facility

3. Microbiological Monitoring Testing - perform quarterly, according to DLAR SOP a) Maintain records for allOR's quarterly, keep on file for 3 yrs.

4. Anesthesia Machines a) Annual Calibrations - schedule and support service representative b) Maintenance of machines and accessories c) Provide services for anesthesia machine/accessory request via surgical service request form

5. Insure all equipment is appropriately maintained and all areas in DLAR surgery are clean and/or aseptic a) All equipment is functional b) Operating rooms are maintained to DLAR standards for surgical suites

6. Manage supplies and equipment needed for research protocols a) All necessary supplies are current and in stock b) All equipment is available and working properly c) Troubleshooting of equipment problems and either correcting problems or scheduling service needs with company service representatives d) All supplies used for aproject are accounted for and charged back to the investigator e) Invoices are complete, accurate and timely

7. Provide pre-op, intra-op, and post-op care for multiple species by DLAR, AAALAC, and USDA standards of anesthesia a) Technical skills for catheter placement, intubation, interpretation of physiological data to maintain appropriate levels of anesthesia and analgesia during the procedure b) Anticipation of the end of the procedure to accomplish recovery in a timely manner c) Proper use of miscellaneous monitoring and anesthesia equipment d) Administer routine, pre-op, intra-op, and post- op treatments as instructed, prescribed and or required; assist in diagnostic treatments such as performing routine hematologic and parasitology test and collecting blood along with other diagnostic specimens

8. Adheres to and insures students, research technicians, veterinary technicians and primary investigators adhere to all federal, state and university regulations and policies regarding the use of animals in research a) All documentation is updated and accurate b) Use of Controlled Substances c) Use of radioactive and/or biohazard materials d) Serve as a liaison to the veterinarian in providing health care to the animals e) Report or take action to correct changes in environmental conditions which affect the well-being of the animals

9. PI communication via phone and email a) Communicate with researchers once request are received for both follow-up and confirmation of receipt

10. Designated to schedule and attend pre-study meetings that involve surgical services. Provide feedback with protocol amendments/changes, etc.

11. Responsible for tracking DLAR budget for any surgical items with enhanced departmental budget expectations for expenditures and revenues (surgical expenses and revenue for surgery services).

12. POC for Education and Training Coordinator and Vet Staff involving any changes to SOP's as it relates to all surgical responsibilities

13. Surgery section of DLAR website: ensuring information is current and correct, along with improvements

14. Research equipment needs and additional information to support the PI's research aims

15. Surgery door sheet (Wkly, Mthly, Qtrly Responsibilities)

16. Audit preparation for USDA, AAALAC, IACUC, DEA site visits to the surgical pavilion. a) Ensuring all areas within the area of responsibility is in good standing and is 'audit ready' at all times.

17. Work with Senior Clinical Veterinarianto review and update the relevant surgical procedures in the DLAR technical training protocols for the annual reports, 3 year de novo submissions, and amendments (as needed) to maintain regulatory compliance

18. Provide Backup Support for Clinical and Rodent Services

19. Perform other duties as assigned

Education

Work requires Associate's Degree in Veterinary Technology with RVT. Obtain LATG within 24 months of hire, LAT desirable.

Experience

Work requires four years of experience in a laboratory, animal care facility or related setting to become familiar with the technical tasks involved in the care of animals (at least three of which was in a lab animal facility, desirable). OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
