The Henry Madden Library obtains, organizes, makes discoverable and available, and preserves materials of all types to serve the teaching, research, and public engagement missions of the University. The Library, staffed by over 60 professionals and paraprofessionals, contains over 1.4 million print volumes, has digitized over 80,000 items that are presented in its local repository, subscribes to over 300 databases and electronic resource packages, and has established an institutional repository (IR) to preserve the intellectual and cultural output of the University. The Library includes separate Music & Media, Teaching Curriculum, Map, Government Document, and Childrens' Literature collections, all of which actively collect materials, as well as a Special Collections Research Center which also includes the University Archives.

Overview:

This position is one of several in the Circulation unit of the Henry Madden Library. This person is responsible for the management of safety and security in the building and serves as the library's safety officer and representative to relevant campus departments. The person in this position is also responsible for hiring, training, and supervising the student Public Safety Assistants (PSAs) who provide front-line safety and security duties for the library. The person in this position is also responsible for basic circulation activities, such as checking materials in and out, collecting fines and fees, issuing guest passes for computers, sorting and reshelving materials, and supervising student assistants in Circulation. The position also has responsibilities in stacks maintenance, technology lending and opening and closing the library on designated days. This person is responsible for the entire library when working alone during evenings and weekends. The person in this position also supervises the stacks maintenance function, trains students, and supervises shelving, collection shifts, and inventories.

Position Summary:

The major duties of the job include:

	
  • Recommends, oversees, and implements safety, security and emergency procedure for the entire library

  • Updates Emergency Action cards, updates the Disaster Phone Tree, monitors fire extinguishers, manages security camera installation and repair, arranges annual fire drills, conducts safety training for new employees, maintains files of signed safety training forms for all employees and all student assistants in the library, arranges/conducts annual safety training updates for all employees, keeps employee safety instructions up to date in emergency binders, updates disaster plan as needed, keeps MSDS binders up to date, updates the OSHA binder as needed

  • Monitors, hires, trains, schedules and evaluates public safety assistants (PSAs)
  • 	
  • Oversees the daily operation of stack maintenance for a collection of approximately 1.2 million items, including shelving and searching of materials
  • 	
  • Trains and provides lead direction to student assistants who shelve materials
  • 	
  • Oversees the stack maintenance of specialized collections in the library, including journals and newspapers, microfilm and the Teacher Resource Center
  • 	
  • Recommends, oversees, and implements special collection-related projects, including shifting, conducting inventories, and weeding
  • 	
  • Provides excellent customer service at the circulation service point
  • 	
  • Checks materials in and out
  • 	
  • Opens/closes the library several times per week
  • 	
  • Assists patrons in person, by phone and via email, answering questions related to circulation policies and procedures
  • 	
  • Assists patrons with finding materials and with directional and informational questions
  • 	
  • Provides oversight for all aspects of the library when scheduled as the only staff member on duty
  • The secondary duties of the job include:

  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

    	
  • Thorough knowledge of and ability to interpret overall library policies and procedures with an in-depth knowledge of library operations, policies and procedures pertaining to security, circulation and stack management
  • 	
  • Thorough knowledge of library collections and their organization, as well as the Library of Congress classification system
  • 	
  • Expertise in the use of library automated systems for circulation
  • 	
  • Thorough knowledge of all aspects of lead work direction in hiring, training, assigning work, organizing work, establishing priorities, and evaluating student assistants
  • 	
  • Working knowledge of university and library policies and procedures associated with the ethical use of and access to library and online resources
  • 	
  • Demonstrated problem solving and research skills to address standard and non-standard work problems
  • 	
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • 	
  • Strong organizational skills to oversee and lead stack maintenance workflow

  • A history of regular attendance and positive performanve evaluations
  • Education and Experience:

    	
  • Completion of a high school education or equivalent certification
  • 	
  • Two years of related library and/or clerical experience
  • Preferred Skills:

    	
  • Bachelor's Degree

  • Experience in serving as the lead for a work function
  • 	
  • Working knowledge of Library of Congress classification system
  • 	
  • Training and/or experience coordinating building services and security
