Assistant Professor - Design History (1764)
The Department of the History of Art and Design at Pratt Institute invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Design History to begin August 2018. Priority will be given to historians of Industrial Design, however, all Design History specializations will be considered. The selected candidate will have expertise in teaching the history and theory of design to undergraduate and graduate students, an understanding of current and future trends in contemporary design, and will be able to address visual and material culture from a variety of interdisciplinary perspectives.
Located on Pratt's historic 25-acre campus in the culturally diverse neighborhood of Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, Pratt is an internationally recognized school of architecture, art, design, and information which draws students from diverse cultural and geographic backgrounds. - Teach Design History survey courses at the graduate and undergraduate level as well as advanced electives in the candidate's field of expertise.
- Develop courses as needed.
- Advise students.
- Conduct and maintain active research programs in fields of expertise and teach and disseminate the products of that research in appropriate professional outlets (publications, presentations, etc.).
- Participate in service to the department, school, Institute, and scholarly community.
- Perform all other related activities as required.
A Ph.D. in Design History, Architectural History, Art History or a related field, publications, and a minimum of two (2) years' teaching experience at a four-year college or university are required. Applicants must have a broad scholarly knowledge of Design History and should demonstrate a promising record of future publications and professional engagement. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrated level of understanding diversity of perspectives, ideas, backgrounds, approaches, and experiences, as well as the ability to develop rapport with a diverse faculty and student body are required.
SALARY is commensurate with education, credentials and experience.
