The Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin is seeking an exceptional physician to join the Department of Internal Medicine as a clinician-investigator focused on cancer prevention research.

While medical education has been part of the clinical landscape of Austin Texas since the mid-1970s, the Dell Medical School enrolled its first class of 50 undergraduate medical students in June of 2016. As part of The University of Texas at Austin, one of the nation's leading research universities, the Dell Medical School will pursue innovation in the re-design of healthcare delivery, excellence in healthcare research, and programs in interdisciplinary and inter-professional education.
Dell Medical School (DMS) is the first medical school established in nearly five decades by a member of the Association of American Universities, an organization of leading public and private research universities. An extraordinary commitment of resources, both public and private, has already been made to enable its development and success.
The LIVESTRONG Cancer Institutes, in conjunction with the LIVESTRONG Foundation, was launched in partnership with Dell Medical School in 2014. Under the leadership of Inaugural Director S. Gail Eckhardt, MD, LIVESTRONG Cancer Institutes will build on the knowledge gained from LIVESTRONG's unique relationship with cancer patients and survivors derived from 10 years of survey data, community outreach, and direct service provision to those affected by cancer; create a scalable, replicable set of best practices in cancer care that includes the full continuum of care including prevention, detection, treatment, survivorship and end of life choices; and include participation of diverse organizations in Central Texas and beyond to explore and identify innovative models and methods of cancer care.
Development of a strong cancer prevention and control health services research program is essential for meeting the goals of Dell Medical School (DMS). This position will be focused on developing a successful research program in cancer prevention and control. DMS will provide start-up funding, mentorship, and shared resources to ensure the greatest opportunity for high research productivity and advancement as a clinician-investigator.
The successful candidate for this position will work closely with Dr. Michael Pignone, Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine and a national expert in cancer prevention and control, who has a long-standing track record of successful grant-funded research and mentorship of junior and mid-career investigators. Dr. Pignone's specific areas of interest include colorectal cancer screening implementation, shared decision making for several cancer prevention and treatment services, and the organization of clinical services to provide high value, patient-centered care.
The position will also include approximately 20-25% clinical and educational effort, with the specific responsibilities to be negotiated.
MD degree with Board Certification (or Board Eligibility if within 2 years of residency) in Internal Medicine.
Unrestricted license (or ability to obtain within 90 days of appointment) to practice medicine in the State of Texas.
Eligible for appointment as an Assistant or Associate Professor.
Strong clinical teaching skills.
Fellowship training and/or experience in health services research.
Evidence of scholarly productivity, including prior national research presentations and publications.
