The Office of the Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning (VPTL) promotes and advances the vibrant, intellectual endeavor of teaching and learning at Stanford. VPTL collaborates with faculty and departments to enrich the depth and range of Stanford learning experiences. We leverage digital technology to make Stanford research and scholarship more broadly accessible beyond campus. And we support the growing interest in extended educational programs, which provide meaningful learning opportunities to additional audiences around the world.
The Associate Director works under the general direction of the Director of Learning Experience Design programs or other management to develop, implement, and administer the vision, strategy, and goals of VPTL's teaching development and learning programs continually assessing needs and appropriately initiating, maintaining, or expanding relevant, general and discipline-specific resources on teaching and learning. As a member of a highly collaborative VPTL professional team, this person contributes to a broad range of campus teaching and learning efforts, with specific management responsibility for selected programs and projects. Partnerships will be with departments, programs and schools.
The Associate Director will guide and mentor the work of part-time VPTL lecturer and graduate student consultants and mentors-in-teaching program, and as relevant, professional and part-time staff.CORE DUTIES:
- Assume primary vision, program management, and oversight responsibility for one or more selected major program(s) for faculty and graduate teaching programs. Includes budget responsibility.
- Develop, implement and evaluate educational offerings and create and/or disseminate materials in collaboration with colleagues across VPTL that are specialized to the disciplinary needs of instructors, TAs, and students, and serve broader audiences. Teach pedagogy courses and workshops in the teaching development programs.
- Develop partnerships with departments and university-wide office to leverage existing and create new opportunities to design and build new programs for faculty and TAs to extend VPTL's pedagogical outreach through distributed campus networks, train-the-trainer efforts, and partnerships.
- Collaborate with VPTL colleagues and departments to ensure that the experiences of Stanford students inform course design and pedagogical decisions.
- Offer one-on-one instructional support to instructors such as conduct mid-quarter and other formative assessments of teaching, and class room observations, and teaching with technology.
- Participate in long-term planning, working with the Director of Faculty Programs and Sr. management to design and implement unified programs/services that expand VPTL's impact and ensure effective campus engagement with research-based teaching and learning practices.
- Supervise and coach VPTL student consultants.
Advanced degree (Ph.D. preferred) in a field represented at Stanford, especially the social sciences and STEM education; 3+ years teaching experience at research university setting; experience with teaching with technology highly desired; 1-3 years in faculty and graduate student teaching development highly desired; 1-3 years in program management, especially complex projects with multiple deadlines highly desired; 1-3 years in student advising, mentoring, or academic coaching highly desired.Minimum Requirements:
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
Bachelor's degree and three or more years of relevant experience or combination of education, training, and relevant experience. Advanced degree may be required for some programs. For jobs with financial responsibilities, experience managing a budget and developing financial plans.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching
- Demonstrated understanding of issues pertaining to teaching and learning in a research university, including knowledge and understanding of faculty and TA development practices, student learning programs, or willingness to develop such knowledge
- Knowledge of research literature in teaching and learning and the ability to translate that knowledge into practice
- Demonstrated effectiveness in consulting with faculty and subject matter experts to assess learning needs and recommend high-impact learning solutions and learning curricula
- Highly developed teaching skills and ability to organize and deliver effective educational offerings
- Facility with current technologies that support teaching and learning
- Demonstrated experience and ability to collaboratively and constructively with a diversity of people at multiple levels (undergraduates, graduate students, postdocs, lecturers, faculty, and staff)
- Ability to work independently and in teams and take the initiative, especially in new ventures
- Strong writing and oral communication skills
- Excellent analytical and organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks
- Ability to listen effectively, to provide tactful feedback and support, and to use sound judgment in confidential matters
- Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks.
- Occasionally use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 40 pounds.
- Rarely sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh >40 pounds.
- Ability to use voice to present information/communicate with others.
