Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The Department of Clinical Sciences is dedicated to excellence in educating and training veterinarians and comparative biomedical scientists, furthering health care and wellness through discovery and clinical research, providing outstanding and compassionate medical care to a diverse range of animal patients, effectively engaging animal-owning public, government and industry partners, and providing leadership in integrating biomedical sciences to advance One Health.
The department provides learning opportunities within the four-year veterinary curriculum and through continuing education for practitioners. Within the Veterinary Hospital, faculty and staff provide care for patients, teach veterinary students, and provide advanced training for interns and residents.
Faculty are very active in research programs to improve the health and welfare of animals and people. The Comparative Biomedical Sciences graduate program allows graduate students to focus their research in the areas of cell biology, infectious diseases, pharmacology, pathology, and population medicine. Other graduate programs with which departmental faculty are affiliated include programs in immunology, physiology, toxicology and functional genomics.

Essential Job Duties

The Department of Clinical Sciences at the NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking a clinical OR tenure-track faculty member in the field of Medical Oncology at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.

Teaching responsibilities will include didactic and laboratory teaching to veterinary students, as well as mentoring and training of veterinary oncology and rotating house officers. The major clinical responsibilities will be provision of services on the Medical Oncology service, and leading a team of senior veterinary students, clinical technicians, and house officers. Case collaboration with other hospital services (Soft Tissue and Oncologic Surgery, Orthopedics, Small Animal Internal Medicine, Radiation Oncology) is common.

The selected individual will be expected to participate in collaborative clinical research trials.

The selected applicant will be expected to establish a collaborative and positive relationship with referring veterinarians, and through the provision of excellent service and good communication, continue to attract and build the oncology and clinical trials case load. The individual will be expected to be a positive and active member of the Oncology Group, attending meetings and contributing to problem solving and the successful operations of the Terry Center and the Veterinary Health Complex as a whole.

In addition to the aforementioned skills, candidates interested in a tenure-track position must have a distinguished record in research, which includes the ability to write and develop proposals that will obtain extramural funding.

Other Work/Responsibilities

Participation in the Summer Scholars Program and teaching of the Clinician Scientist selective.

Minimum Education/Experience

DVM or equivalent degree. Completion of a residency in Veterinary Internal Medicine-Oncology is required.

Departmental Required Skills

Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere.

Aptitude for and desire to teach and mentor senior veterinary students, house officers, and residents is required.

Documented research record or potential to develop a clinical trials research program, which includes the ability to write and develop proposals that will obtain extramural funding required for tenure-track candidates.

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and up to 100 lbs with assistance.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Preference will be given to candidates who are board certified, possess a PhD degree or have training/experience in clinical trials and translational research.

Documented experience in teaching and scholarship is desired.

Required License or Certification

Candidates must meet requirements for faculty certificate or regular veterinary license in North Carolina.
