The Mathematics Department at Illinois State University is seeking applications for one 9-month, tenure-track position in Discrete Mathematics to begin August 16, 2018.

Qualifications. Applicants need to have, or anticipate having, a conferred Ph.D. in mathematics or related field by August 16, 2018, and have an active research program in Discrete Mathematics compatible with the research interests in the Department. Candidates should be able to teach a wide range of courses and show a strong commitment to quality teaching. State law mandates demonstrable oral proficiency in the English language as a requirement for this position.

Responsibilities. Duties include teaching courses for major and general Departmental programs (typically two courses per semester), research, and service. Refereed research publications, quality teaching, and professional involvement and service are required for promotion and tenure.

Rank and Salary. Rank is at the Assistant Professor level. Salary is competitive and depends on qualifications and experience.

Department and Programs. The Mathematics Department is in the College of Arts and Sciences and has over 30 tenure-track lines. It offers Bachelors and Masters degrees in mathematics, and a Ph.D. degree in mathematics education. Within the Bachelors program (about 400 majors) there are sequences in mathematics, mathematics education, statistics, and actuarial science. The Masters program serves approximately 75 students and offers specializations in pure mathematics, statistics, actuarial science, biomathematics, and mathematics education. The Department also provides numerous service and general education mathematics courses.

The Department has a Discrete Mathematics group of 5 researchers with interests in graph theory, combinatorics, combinatorial design theory, and vector space partitions. The Department also has an Algebra group of 6 researchers. Both groups convene weekly research seminars and the Department frequently hosts regional research conferences. The University and Community. Illinois State University is a state-supported comprehensive institution with over 20,000 students. It is located in Bloomington-Normal, a fast-growing community of over 130,000 residents. Positioned in central Illinois, Bloomington-Normal is about 120 miles (a 2-hour drive) southwest of Chicago, and is served by Amtrak, and by several commercial airlines.
