Position Summary: The Director of Energy Services provides supervision and leadership to the Energy Services Department. The primary purpose of the Energy Services Department is the production, delivery and management of the University's supply-side thermal energy (steam, chilled water) utilities and electricity, the management of non-potable water and stormwater systems and management of the relationship with the local utility providing water and sewer service to the campus. Energy Services also includes management of the University's Climate Action Plan, greenhouse gas inventory, and reporting. Energy Services is comprised of the following divisions: Cogeneration Systems, Chilled Water Systems, Electric Distribution Systems, Water/Wastewater(Sewer)/Non-Potable Water Systems, Stormwater Systems, Sustainability, and Business Operations. The annual budget exceeds $150 million per year, all receipt supported. Energy Services also manages a significant capital program. This position reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Campus Enterprises. Primary Duties include: (1) Planning and Policy: The Director provides leadership for Energy Services in the development and implementation of strategic planning and goal setting process that supports the goals of Finance and Administration and the University. He/she ensures that Energy Services' five-year capital plan is periodically reviewed and approved. He/she develops and reports on measures that track progress toward goals. (2) Financial: The Director manages the financial performance to ensure that operating, capital, and debt requirements are met while maintaining the lowest possible pricing. He/she oversees the annual budgeting and rate-setting process. He/she ensures that financial systems and controls are in place, followed, and well documented. (3) Operations: The Director oversees the division managers in the daily operation and employee management of Energy Services divisions to ensure that all areas of service delivery are continuously improved to increase reliability and efficiency to the highest levels and contain cost. He/she monitors and evaluates the overall performance of each division. He/she ensures that energy systems meet environmental and safety standards consistent with the University's goals and position of leadership. (4) Human Resources: The Director encourages the development of all employees to their maximum potential through leadership, coaching, support, and training. The Director insures that the Department complies with the University's Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative Action plans. The Director ensures that the Department meets all University human resources requirements, including the administration of the work plan and performance review program. (5) External Relationships: The Director builds effective formal and informal communication channels with customers and other University departments that are integral to the success of Energy Services, such as Facilities Planning and Construction, Environment, Health, and Safety, and Facilities Energy Management. He/she builds effective working relationships nationally with managers of energy departments in other research universities with major energy production capacity. He/she stays abreast of changes in the energy industry through active participation in groups such as the International District Energy Association (IDEA).

Education Requirements: Advanced degree preferred. Bachelor's degree in an appropriate field of engineering or related sciences.
Qualification and Experience: Ten years of progressively responsible experience, including senior level management experience, in an energy utility or large research university district energy system or other large energy system, such as a military base. Experience in a research university or similar setting employing the district energy concept preferred. Candidate must demonstrate strong organizational, management, administrative and communication skills are critical. The position involves regular contact with high-level administration, University counsel, construction and facility planning staff, faculty, officials within municipal, state and federal agencies, private property owners, attorneys, real estate agents and the general public.
