Position Summary: Founded in 2003, the UNC/NC State Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering is a unique collaboration between North Carolina's two flagship universities: The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) and North Carolina State University (NC State). The nationally ranked UNC Hospitals and School of Medicine at UNC-CH provide an excellent clinical environment for interactions and translation, College of Arts and Sciences forms the academic core of the Carolina experience. College of Engineering at NC State, ranked one of the finest engineering and computer science schools in the world, offers state-of-the-art facilities for students and faculty engaged in vital areas of research and technology transfer. In addition to the resources of the Joint Department, the Closed-Loop Engineering for Advanced Rehabilitation (CLEAR) core (the former Rehabilitation Engineering Core;, Human Movement Science Program at UNC-CH (, UNC Neuroscience Center (, the Biomedical Research Imaging Center at UNC-CH, the NSF ERC ASSIST Center at NC State, and NC State College of Veterinary Medicine provide excellent opportunities for Rehabilitation Engineering faculty to develop multidisciplinary and translational collaborations. Our mission is to improve human quality of life, personal and work environments, and rehabilitation products and processes through careful study, analysis, research, and design of innovative technologies to benefit the people of North Carolina, the nation, and the world. We encourage candidates conducting research in the areas of: (1) neural-machine interfaces (including interfaces with the central and peripheral nervous systems at cellular and/or system levels), (2) neural stimulation and modulation to enhance sensorimotor function, (3) novel technologies and application for neuroimaging, (4) human-machine shared learning and control, and (5) clinical translation of novel neurorehabilitation technology. Outstanding candidates in other areas of Rehabilitation Engineering and Neural Engineering will also be considered. Successful applicants will have already established a highly competitive independent research program, or will otherwise possess the clear potential to do so. The candidate must have the ability to collaborate with basic researchers and/or clinical investigators. Clinical experience working with patient populations is a plus. The selected candidate will have a primary appointment at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with tenure home in the College of Arts and Science. Lab space will be on the UNC campus. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with clinical departments in the School of Medicine at UNC and will have access to the resources at both UNC and NC State.

Education Requirements: Qualified candidates should have a doctoral degree in biomedical engineering or a similarly equivalent area, and have demonstrated excellent capability for scholarly activity during post-doctoral research.

Qualification and Experience: Candidates will be expected to contribute to undergraduate and graduate student education, teaching classes in areas of electronics and biomedical instrumentation and neural engineering. Candidates will have already developed or will demonstrate potential to develop an extramural funded research program. Investigators will collaborate with other clinical and basic science faculty both within BME and across other departments at both UNC and NC State.
