Director of the Weissman Center for Leadership
Mount Holyoke College invites applications and nominations for Director of the Weissman Center for Leadership (WCL). Mount Holyoke College is a global leader in women’s education and the WCL is central to the advancement of the College’s core mission to build on our historic legacy of leadership in the education of women; and to prepare students, through a liberal education integrating curriculum and careers, for lives of thoughtful, effective, and purposeful engagement in the world. Through programming and support of students, faculty, and staff the WCL fosters synergies to advance transformative leadership for the twenty-first century.
Established in 1999, the WCL's work is guided by four over-arching themes: Inspiration sparked by public events with renowned guest speakers; Capacity-building to develop skills and confidence through leadership courses, experiential learning, conferences, and trainings; Mentoring and Networking on campus and across nonprofit, public service, and business realms to promote opportunities for professional success; and Reflection and Discovery, the foundation for perpetual leadership growth.
The WCL programs and initiatives are critical to integrating leadership throughout the curriculum and the intellectual mission of the college. The WCL oversees three high-quality core programs in 1) community-based learning; 2) leadership and public service; and 3) speaking, arguing and writing. In addition, through a series of initiatives, programs, and annual events, the WCL supports students, faculty, and staff in the development of leadership skills inside and outside the classroom.
Description and scope
The Director of Mount Holyoke’s WCL leads a dynamic and committed team of talented faculty and staff. Reporting to the Dean of Faculty, the Director provides strategic and operational leadership of the Center and works closely with the College’s other academic center directors, faculty, and students to develop Weissman Center planning and programming consistent with Mount Holyoke’s priorities and to advance the College’s mission. We seek someone with demonstrated leadership, a strong and strategic vision for women’s leadership and public engagement, supervisory skills to support and manage a high-functioning professional staff, and to work with them to develop and lead initiatives in women’s leadership and public service, community-based learning, and speaking, arguing, and writing. The successful candidate also will have a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and administrators across the college as well as to effectively communicate and work with alumnae and donors. This a five year appointment with the possibility of renewal.

- Develop and implement a strategic vision for the Center consistent with College priorities and resources;
- Supervise, review, and support the professional development of an eight-person staff;
- Manage and oversee the WCL budget;
- Work with faculty, staff and the community to develop innovative and timely speaker series, workshops and other thematic events;
- Collaborate with the Office of Communications to advertise and publicize Center programming;
- Coordinate Center’s initiatives and programming with that of other major Centers and departments on campus;
- Teach a 1-credit class each year on leadership of the director’s design;
- Manage and effectively steward donor support for the WCL;
- Draft and submit reports to update faculty and campus community on Center’s activities;
- Represent the WCL at major campus and off-campus events;
- Facilitate WCL co-sponsorship of programming
- Organize and help to facilitate our annual Senior Symposium
- Support institutional grant development and administration
- Draw on the expertise of WCL staff to support experiential learning and pedagogy in tandem with the College’s Teaching & Learning initiative
A Ph.D. or terminal degree in core field; experience in a leadership position and proven ability to supervise high functioning staff; experience with budget development and management; experience writing and speaking to large and diverse audiences; strong oral and written communications; strong one-on-one interpersonal skills; and a demonstrated commitment to women’s education and to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
