The University of Illinois seeks a creative, collaborative, self-directed, outgoing person for the Visiting Extension Educator, Family and Consumer Science (SNAP-Ed) position with University of Illinois Extension. This position is responsible for organizing and conducting nutrition education programs related to policy, system, and environmental changes targeted for limited resource families and communities. The position requires developing partnerships with community organizations, providing technical assistance and working collaboratively with community partners, and providing direct nutrition education for organizations and families in communities within the target area. As part of University of Illinois Extension, this position will be joining a statewide and national network of professionals who provide programming to fulfill the mission of the Extension System.

One full time position is available

Location: Unit 23 (Bond, Clinton, Jefferson, Marion, and Washington Counties)

Position will be housed in Jefferson County

This is a security-sensitive position. Comprehensive background checks, including but not limited to a criminal conviction information check, a CANTS check, and a review of the Registered Sex Offender list, will be conducted.

Specific responsibilities of the Visiting Extension Educator, Family and Consumer Science (SNAP-Ed) are as follows:
  • Develop professional collaborations with the community stakeholders and partners that serve the SNAP target population.
  • Actively participate in community partnership and coalitions that are working to improve the nutrition and wellness environment through policy, system and environmental change.
  • Organize and conduct nutrition outreach related to policy, system and environmental interventions targeted for limited resource audiences.
  • Work with County Director to oversee the Unit's SNAP-Ed program plan and provide team leadership and programmatic direction to the SNAP-Ed Community Workers to meet the State Illinois Nutrition Education Program goals.
  • Confer with the County Director on the annual strategic program plan for the Unit and action steps.
  • Meet and assist with qualifying K-13 schools on wellness and nutrition programming through assessments, technical support and evaluation of wellness policies.
  • Provide direct nutrition education and training for organizations, agencies and educational institutions in strategically identified communities.
  • Assist counties in the Unit in developing marketing plans and tools for the SNAP-Ed program.
  • Assist counties in the Unit in reporting program outcomes to local, regional, and statewide stakeholders.
  • Develop effective and contemporary approaches to communicate with audiences and partners. This may include constantly evolving electronic technologies.
  • Establish professional relationships and participate in campus-based partnerships that connect academic programs and research to complement Extension programming by collaborating with Extension Specialists and/or faculty members on research projects as appropriate within the initiatives.
  • Serve as an effective Family and Consumer Sciences team member and volunteer for leadership roles as appropriate.
  • Comply with all reporting deadlines and requirements (e.g. plans-of-work, activity and impact reporting, etc.).
  • As needed, accept statewide responsibilities as invited with approval from the County Director.
  • Pursue professional development opportunities to enhance competency in subject matter area.

  • Perform other duties that contribute to the mission of University of Illinois Extension programming, as assigned.
  • Local, regional, and statewide travel required; personal transportation required.
  • To perform the functions of this position, the employee will be required to perform work both within an office and outside in the communities that are served, and must have the capability to travel from one location to the other in a timely fashion. Employee is responsible for securing personal transportation. A valid driver's license is preferred. Some work will be required during evening and/or weekends. When working, the employee may be exposed to a variety of environmental factors to include, but not limited to, hot or cold weather, exposure to noise and allergens, and uneven ground. In performing the functions of this position, the employee may be subject to various mental and physical demands as well to include, but not limited to, independently traveling to and performing work at different locations, lifting and moving items that may occasionally weigh up to forty (40) pounds and frequently weigh up to twenty (20) pounds, and twisting, pushing, and pulling movements. Administrative Relationship: Extension Educators are administratively responsible to the County Director.

Program Relationship: Extension Educators are programmatically responsible to the Program Leader(s) for the delivery of programs that mesh with identified national and state priorities.

  • Required: Master's degree related to subject matter emphasis from an accredited institution of higher education. Examples of relevant majors include, but are not limited to: nutrition, adult education, family and consumer science, dietetics, or public health. Candidates with a Master's degree in progress may be considered for interviews, but degree must be completed by hire date. Experience creating and providing educational/training programs in formal and informal settings. Relevant experience with collaboratively engaging groups or communities to implement nutrition based strategies that foster a healthy environment. Strong oral and written communication skills. Evidence of strong interpersonal skills and ability to work within a team environment.
  • Preferred: Experience within the specialty field (nutrition or public health) is highly desirable. Demonstrated ability to build and maintain diverse networks. Familiarity with the area in which the position is located.

Additional Information

The position is a temporary, full-time, benefits-eligible, non-tenured academic professional position appointed on a 12-month service basis. This position may become non-visiting at a later time dependent upon funding and/or programmatic needs. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date.
